The Black Metal Missile is a piece of ammunition in Valheim, dealing 120 pierce. At 120 total damage it is 3rd of the 26 ammunition, so it is a step on the ladder rather than the top of it. Pierce damage hurts Troll more than most things, which is what to carry it for.

How to Craft

Crafted at Artisan table, station level 1.
Costs 10x Wood, 1x Black metal at quality 1.
Materials can be found in the Plains biome.

When to Use It

Mid game. Black Metal drops from Fuling in the Plains, which is well past Moder.

Properties

120 pierce, for the Ballista. 60 percent more than the wooden missile, crafted at the Artisan table.

Worth it where raids are the threat. A ballista fires on its own while you are elsewhere, so the ammunition it holds decides whether a raid is handled or merely delayed.

Notes

Ammunition damage is added to the weapon's base damage before any other calculation, which is why the arrow and not the bow decides a shot's damage type.
Arrows are fired by bows and bolts by crossbows; the 2 are not interchangeable.
With more than one kind in the inventory, right-clicking the stack selects which is used.
