Nidhögg the Thundering is a one-handed sword built around Lightning: every so often a hit throws a charge from your target to whatever is standing behind it. You make it by taking the plain Nidhögg back to the Black Forge with an Iolite from a Charred Fortress in the Ashlands. It deals 135 slash and 10 lightning damage. That 145 total damage ranks 8th among swords, so it is a step up the ladder rather than the top of it. Carry it for the Lava Blob, Morgen and Blob, which take more from lightning than most things.
How to Craft
You craft it at a level 4 Black Forge from:
- 1x Nidhögg: crafted at a Black Forge.
- 6x Flametal: smelted from Flametal Ore in a Blast Furnace.
- 1x Iolite: found in the Charred Fortresses of the Ashlands.

When to Use It
This is a late-game sword, because Flametal comes from the Ashlands, the furthest south the map goes.
Upgrades
You can upgrade it 3 times after crafting, and each level needs the station one step higher than the last. The stats elsewhere on this page are for quality 1, so this table shows where your own copy sits on the ladder:

Properties
Chain lightning is the reason to make this sword. The Iolite adds 10 lightning damage and gives the primary attack a 25% chance, and the secondary a 20% chance, to trigger chain lightning. The chain deals 75 lightning damage that ignores your skill level and cannot be blocked or dodged. It then has an 80% chance to bounce to 2 to 4 more targets within 8 metres.
Lightning is also rarely resisted: only the Skugg, the Barka and Kall Fimbulbringer take half damage from it, and nothing is immune. In the crowded fights against the Charred legions, the bounce does more work than the flat 10 damage ever will.
Notes
The Swords skill does not change the lightning chain's damage, so it hits as hard for a new character as for one with the skill maxed out.
