Above the hundred metre line on the Mountain, the sky gets busy. Drakes are pale little flying dragons that circle over the snowfields and spit frost at anything on the ground, and they usually find you well before the wolves do. They are not durable, but they attack from somewhere you cannot reach, and their damage lands on top of a biome that is already freezing you to death.

Behaviour

A drake stays in the air almost all the time, gliding in wide circles over its patch of peak and scanning the snow below. It spots targets at range and closes to a comfortable band of roughly five to fifteen metres. Then it fires its Spit cold attack: three fast ice projectiles in a loose spread, each able to take 90 frost off you, on a six second cooldown. It has no real melee attack and no interest in landing, so the whole fight happens at range and on its terms. It will chase you a long way, up to a couple of hundred metres from its spawn point, before it loses interest and drifts home. Drakes do not flee, sleep or call for help, but they rarely come alone: a nest holds up to three, and once one opens fire the neighbours are usually already banking towards you. They will also happily walk you backwards off a cliff edge, which kills more players than the frost does.

Where to Find It

Drakes live on the Mountain, and only above roughly a hundred metres of altitude, which in practice means the snowy summits rather than the lower slopes. They are common up there at any hour and starred variants can spawn, so a two star drake putting out far more than ninety per projectile is a real hazard on a tall peak. Up to three guard each Drake Nest, the stone eyries holding the Dragon Eggs you need to summon Moder, so you cannot avoid fighting them. They also come to you: the raid announced as a cold wind blowing from the mountains sends drakes and Fenrings to your base, and that event can only trigger while Moder is still alive.

Where and When At Once How Often Stars
Up to 3 spawn points in Drake Nest (100 meter altitude) - One time No
Middle of the tall Mountains (100 meter altitude) 2 - No
During "A cold wind blows from the mountains" event before defeating Moder 3 Very common No

Strengths and Weaknesses

Fire is the answer by a wide margin. A drake takes half again as much damage from fire, so two or three Fire Arrows from a Huntsman Bow will drop one out of the sky, while frost of any kind simply bounces off it. Melee is mostly pointless because it never lands, so treat every drake as an archery problem and carry enough arrows for a whole peak, not just one bird. Its spit is a projectile, not a beam: a shield blocks it cleanly, open ground lets you strafe out of the spread, and rocks or a quickly dug snow bank will soak volleys while you line up a shot. Drink Frost Resistance Mead before you climb, both for the biome's cold and because it blunts the spit considerably. Iron armour and a decent bow make the peaks manageable. Silver makes them safe, mostly because it survives the wolves that arrive while you are busy looking up.

  • It takes extra damage from Fire.
  • It ignores Frost and Spirit.

Drops

Every drake drops a Freeze Gland, the crafting ingredient for Frost Arrows, Frostner, the Staff of Frost and Eyescream.

Notes

  • The game files still call Drakes "Hatchling", from their earlier name "Dragon Hatchling".
  • Drakes have a maximum chase distance of 200m from their spawn position, after which they drop aggro more easily.
  • You are likely to find Drakes close to a Dragon Egg, guarding it.
  • Drakes drop unusually valuable loot. Their Freeze Glands, glowing blue objects dropped on death, are needed for all frost-based weapons and foods, and their trophy goes into the helmet of the Wolf Armor set.
  • In appearance they closely resemble an Amphiptere, a winged, legless type of dragon, unlike Moder, who looks like a huge wyvern.
  • Drakes are weak to fire, but Obsidian Arrows still beat Fire Arrows against them because of the large damage gap: Obsidian totals 52 and Fire totals 44.
