The Ulv is what the Mountain keeps in its caves: a hunched, four-legged cousin of the Fenring that is strictly an underground problem. Its fifty health makes it one of the most fragile things at its tier, but it bites for eighty in a corridor you cannot back out of, and it never comes alone. Nobody has ever been killed by an Ulv in open snow, because Ulvs never leave the caves.

Behaviour

An Ulv holds its spawn point until something walks into the room. Then it closes in on all fours with a low, quick gait that is much harder to read than a Fenring's upright stride. Both of its attacks are pure slash damage. The bite crouches first and then swings upward for 80 within a metre and a half, on a five second cooldown. The rearing double-paw slash hits for 70 and reaches three metres, but only comes round every nine seconds. Neither attack is telegraphed for long, and in the tight stone of a cave the short reach barely matters, because everywhere you can stand is within it. Ulvs do not howl for reinforcements, but caves place them in groups and sound carries, so pulling one usually wakes its neighbours through the next doorway. They do not flee once committed. Their stagger threshold is only half the usual, so they are unusually easy to knock off balance, and that is often the difference between fighting two and fighting five.

Where to Find It

The Ulv is a dungeon creature, not a biome creature, and it spawns only inside the Mountain's underground locations. In the frost caves it is a common spawn point, sharing the tunnels with Fenrings and Bats. In the Howling Caverns built around Geirrhafa, every one of them spawns as a 1-star. Both are one-time spawn points, so a cleared cave stays cleared and you cannot farm a chamber by waiting outside and coming back. No boss kill gates them, so an early climb can find them long before you are ready. In practice the cold does the gatekeeping instead, since neither cave is survivable without Frost Resistance Mead or Wolf Armour. Ulvs never wander the surface, at any hour or in any weather.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Fifty health means almost anything kills an Ulv. The real question is what kills it before it reaches you in a tunnel. It shrugs off fire almost completely, so leave the Fire Arrows and any flame-infused blade in the chest. Reach for poison instead, the one thing it genuinely dislikes: a quiver of Poison Arrows left over from the Swamp ends the fight in a single exchange. Everything else lands at face value, so a silver weapon or Frostner is perfectly respectable. Because it staggers so easily, a shield and a parry are the cleanest answer in close quarters: parry, stagger, kill, and the 80 slash never lands at all. Fight them in a doorway rather than an open chamber so they arrive one at a time, and keep stone at your back, because in a Frost Cave the one that kills you is always the second one you did not see. Silver-tier armour makes the bite survivable and mildly embarrassing. In padded leather or less, one bad pull is fatal.

  • It takes extra damage from Poison.
  • It is barely troubled by Fire.

Drops

Half of them drop a Wolf Fang, which Frost Resistance Mead and the Fang Spear are built from, and one in ten drops a trophy.

Level Variants

A creature can spawn at one of three levels, shown as stars beside its name. Each level is rolled separately when it spawns, so a two-star is rarer than a one-star. The difference goes beyond the numbers: a starred Ulv is recoloured or larger, so you can see it coming.

Notes

  • Ulv comes from Old Norse ulfr. The word is still used in both Norway and Denmark, but it became taboo in Sweden and was replaced with varg.
