Just after dusk, something black-furred comes loping across the snow on two legs, and it is not a wolf. The Fenring is the Mountain's night shift: a werewolf that spawns only in the high interior after dark and burns off at first light. It closes the gap on you faster than anything else at its tier. Players who are used to holding a shield wall against wolf packs tend to meet their first Fenring and find out that a shield wall does not stop something that simply jumps over it.

Behaviour

Fenrings hunt instead of patrolling. They move on two legs with a loose, loping stride, they stay quiet about it and they pick out a player from a long way off across open snow. The approach is the dangerous part. Instead of walking into your guard, a Fenring closes to between five and nine metres and launches a jump attack. The leap covers the whole gap and lands for heavy slash damage, and it can repeat it roughly every eight seconds for as long as the fight lasts. Once it is on top of you, it rakes with a claw sweep across a three metre arc every few seconds, sometimes as a lunging bite that carries it forward again on the same swing. Fenrings do not sleep and do not flee when wounded. They come in ones and twos, not packs, but two at once from opposite angles is common on open ground, and they will happily join a fight you were already losing against wolves. At dawn any survivor simply vanishes, so a Fenring that has chased you halfway down a mountainside stops existing if you last long enough.

Where to Find It

Fenrings spawn only in the Mountain biome, and only in its middle: the high interior snowfields, not the treeline where you first climb up out of the Black Forest. They are strictly nocturnal, spawning after nightfall and despawning at dawn, so if you keep your mountain work to daylight you can mine silver for weeks without seeing one. The spawn is uncommon and capped at two in a given area. With no star variants, every Fenring you meet has the same three hundred health. It is not the same creature as the Ulv, the four-legged version that lives inside frost caves at all hours, though the two are often confused. Nothing gates the Fenring beyond surviving the biome itself, which in practice means frost resistance, a wolf cape or enough armour to take a leap without folding.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Fire is the answer, and it is not close. Fire arrows, a burning weapon or even a well-placed campfire cut a Fenring down in a fraction of the hits anything else needs, and the cold means you usually carry fire up there anyway. Failing that, it takes ordinary damage from everything except poison, so a silver weapon or a black metal sword does the job fine. The real problem is the leap, not the health pool. Do not try to hold a line: the jump attack exists to beat a static defence, and standing still behind a raised shield invites it. Keep moving, force the claw sweep instead and parry that, since Fenrings stagger easily and a parried claw opens a long window. If you have height, use it, because the leap is far less reliable when you stand above it on a ledge or a rock it has to climb. Wolf or padded armour makes the fight comfortable, while a pair of them will end you in troll hide. Keep frost resistance mead on your belt so the cold is not draining you while you concentrate on the fight.

  • It takes extra damage from Fire.
  • It resists Poison.

Drops

Wolf fangs are the practical reason to be out after dark, since both the draugr fang bow and the fang spear need them.

Notes

  • The name "Fenring" comes from Fenrir, the same way Surtlings come from Surt. Fenrir (sometimes spelled Fenris or Fenrisulfr, "the Fenrir/Fenris-wolf") is a giant wolf from Norse and Germanic mythology who will swallow the god Odin during Ragnarökr. He is the son of Loki.
