The low green tufts on the floor of the Black Forest are wild carrot plants, and pulling one up gives you Carrot Seeds. They never grow back, so your first handful is the only free one.

• Carrot Seeds are found on the ground in the Black Forest biome. Picked seeds do not respawn.
• Planting a Carrot with the "Seed-carrot" option of the Cultivator gives you three seeds.

The Cultivator offers two different plants, and you choose between them when you plant. The carrot plant grows from seeds and gives you carrots to eat. The carrot seed plant grows from a carrot and gives you seeds and nothing else. Neither turns into the other, and an edible plant never produces seeds however long you leave it. The wild carrot plants growing in the world are seed plants, which is why the first thing your farm gets from the wild is a handful of seeds.

How to Get It

Walk the Black Forest and pick the wild carrot plants by hand. Picking them takes no tool and no tier, but a picked plant does not respawn, so the wild stock is a starter supply rather than a renewable one. Replace it by farming: a Cultivator will plant a whole carrot back into the ground as seed and return three. Planting needs cultivated soil in the Meadows, Black Forest or Plains, because seeds sown in the colder biomes will not sprout.
