Oat Seeds are where the Deep North's baking starts. Ground once in a windmill they become oats, and ground again they become flour. Oats go into Oat Milk and Oatmeal, while Oat Flour goes into Pancakes, Oven Pancake Batter, Unbaked Poteitr, Meat in Bread and the Northern Morning Fare feast. Because the seeds are both crop and ingredient, every harvest is a choice between planting and milling. They weigh 0.1 and stack to 100.

Farming

You plant Oat Seeds as oat straw, and each grown plant gives three Oat Seeds back. A crop takes 4,000 to 5,000 seconds to grow. The plant needs tilled ground made with a Cultivator, half a metre of space around it and open sky. A crop with too little room, too little sunlight or the wrong biome shows its problem next to its name and will not grow. It grows in the Meadows, Black Forest, Plains and Ashlands but not in the Deep North itself, so the farm belongs at a southern base.

You do not eat the seeds as they are. A Windmill grinds them into Oats, and a second pass grinds the oats into Oat Flour. The windmill holds fifty at a time and drops its output in stacks of fifty. It works faster in strong wind and slower when its top is covered.

How to Get It

Your first seeds come from the granaries of the Abandoned Villages. Each barrel holds four to ten, a granary has up to nine barrels, and each barrel is present one time in two. That is enough to start a bed, and from then on the bed supplies itself, giving three seeds back for every one planted.

Raw Oats can be eaten for 33 health and 33 stamina over 30 minutes, the longest of the raw crops. Five Oats and five Ice make Oat Milk in a Mead Ketill for 110 stamina. Two Oats, two Lingonberries and an Oat Milk make Oatmeal, which gives 115 stamina and 85 eitr.

Notes

Replanting a third of each harvest keeps the bed the same size, and replanting more makes it bigger.
You need an Artisan Table nearby to place the windmill, but it keeps running without one afterwards.
