Farming only starts once a Cultivator comes off the Forge, and the Turnip is the crop that proves it. You raise it from seeds gathered in the Swamp.
Farming
- You grow Turnips by planting Turnip Seeds with the Cultivator.
- They take between 4000s and 5000s to fully grow, which is 66m40s to 83m20s, or about 2.22-2.78 in-game days.
- They will not grow in the Mountain biome.
- Planting and growing a "Seed-turnip" with the Cultivator gives you 3 Turnip Seeds.
The Cultivator offers two different plants, and you choose between them when you plant. The turnip plant grows from seeds, and you harvest it for Turnips to eat. The turnip seed plant grows from a Turnip, and you harvest it for seeds and nothing else. Neither turns into the other, and an edible plant never produces seeds however long you leave it standing. The wild turnip plants in the world are seed plants, which is why the first thing your farm gets from the wild is a handful of seeds.

How to Get It
Pick Turnip Seeds from the yellow plants standing in the Swamp, then sow them on ground turned over with a Cultivator. The Cultivator is a bronze tool, which puts the whole crop behind a Forge. The plants need over an hour of real time to grow, and then you pull them up by hand with no tool at all. They grow happily in most biomes, so your farm can sit safely in the Meadows rather than in the mud. Boars eat them too, which makes the Turnip a taming food as much as a cooking one.
