Molten Core is a knot of stone that still glows from the inside, as if the heat never quite left it. You pick it up off the floor of a charred fortress or a putrid hole in the Ashlands.

How to Get It
Cores lie loose on the ground inside charred fortresses and putrid holes, and the charred chests those ruins are built around hold more. You do not mine or chop them, so tool tier does not matter. The real cost is the Ashlands itself: a contested sea crossing, ground hot enough to burn you, and the charred guarding the fortress you are looting. Cores can go through a portal, so anything you find deep in a ruin can be sent home instead of carried back out.
