The Arbalest trades a bow's rate of fire for one enormous bolt, which is what you want when something large and armoured is walking straight at you. It comes off the Black Forge, a station you cannot build until the Mistlands. It deals 200 pierce damage. That makes it the weakest crossbow, and that is the point: it is the one you can make first. Pierce damage hurts a Troll more than most things, which is what to carry it for.
How to Craft
You craft it at a level 1 Black Forge from:
- 10x Wood: chopped from any tree.
- 8x Iron: smelted from Scrap Iron in a Smelter.
- 4x Root: dropped by Abominations in the Swamp.

When to Use It
Its Iron comes out of the Sunken Crypts and its Root drops from Abominations, both in the Swamp, but you can only craft it once you reach the Mistlands and build a Black Forge.
Upgrades
You can upgrade it 3 times after crafting, and each level needs the station one step higher than the last. The other figures on this page are for quality 1, so this table shows where your own copy sits:

Properties
A single bolt deals 200 pierce, and it costs nothing to fire. A loaded crossbow shoots for no stamina at all and can stay loaded, so the shot is ready before the fight rather than during it. That is 2 and a half times the best bow in the game.
It fires one bolt every 6 seconds. Loading takes 3.5 seconds and 3 stamina at skill 0, and once you add the ready and firing animations, that is the real rate of fire. Sprinting or jumping throws the load away, and you cannot load a bolt while sprinting at all.
It pairs well with stealth. An unaware target takes triple damage, and 200 plus a bolt at triple is the largest single hit a player can deal.
Notes
- The recoil knocks you backwards and will throw you off anything steep. Firing while jumping cancels the recoil entirely.
- You can fire it while blocking, but you cannot load a bolt while blocking.
- Bolts fly far faster than arrows, which makes weak points and quick targets like Hares much easier to hit.
- It has 50 less durability than a bow of the same quality: 100 at quality 2, exactly one full stack of bolts. Carry a repair plan or a second crossbow.
