Staff of Embers is the fire end of Mistlands magic. It is built at the Galdr Table and puts a Surtling Core and a great deal of Refined Eitr behind every cast. It deals 120 blunt and 120 fire. At 240 total damage it ranks 2nd among magic staves, a step on the ladder rather than the top of it. In the Mistlands the fire matters more than it sounds: Seekers, Seeker Brood and Seeker Soldiers all shrug off blunt, pierce and slash but not fire, so the fire half is the damage that actually lands. Fire damage also hurts Abominations, Bats and Bears more than most things.
How to Craft
Made at a level 1 galdr table, from:
- 20x Yggdrasil Wood: Chopped from Yggdrasil shoots in the Mistlands.
- 4x Surtling Core: Dropped by surtlings and found in burial chambers.
- 16x Refined Eitr: Refined from sap and soft tissue at an eitr refinery.

When to Use It
Mid game. It needs Mistlands materials and a Galdr Table rather than the Black Forge that makes Mistlands weapons, so it comes after Yagluth and the sea crossing beyond him. The Ashlands and the Deep North still lie past this point.
Upgrades
It can be upgraded 3 times after crafting, and each level needs the station built one step higher than the last. Every other figure on this page is for quality 1, so this table shows where your own copy sits:
| Quality | Crafting Station | Fire | Blunt | Durability | Resources |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Galdr table (Level 1) | 120 | 120 | 200 |
|
| 2 | Galdr table (Level 2) | 126 | 120 | 250 |
|
| 3 | Galdr table (Level 3) | 132 | 120 | 300 |
|
| 4 | Galdr table (Level 4) | 138 | 120 | 350 |

Properties
It throws a fireball that does 2 different things. The direct hit is blunt, and the explosion deals fire damage in an area and sets it alight. The area damage hits creatures and not players, so it is safe to use beside someone.
Burning stacks. Several casts on the same target pile the effect up, so against anything with a lot of health the damage over time is a real part of the total rather than a garnish.
At maximum Elemental Magic skill it costs 24 Eitr, which a single Magecap will pay for. A low-skill caster needs proper eitr food for the same cast.
Notes
- The arc and the area make it the best thing in the game for hunting Hares, which nothing else reliably hits.
- The head glows orange-red and adds about 20% to your visibility while sneaking. Magic weapons have no secondary attack.
- A runestone in the Mistlands has Ulf setting his own beard alight with one of these.
