The Bear is the odd one out in the Black Forest: an eight hundred health brute in a biome where the usual threat is a knee-high Greydwarf. You will not see many, since only one roams a given stretch of woodland and they are genuinely rare. The one you do meet hits as hard as anything in the Swamp and reaches further than you expect. Its hide and paws make an armour set good enough that most players eventually go looking for one on purpose.
Behaviour
It hunts on the ground and alone, and it does not lose interest: once it targets you, it keeps closing in. The bite is a forward lunge for pierce damage. For the claw attack it rears up on its hind legs and slams down across more than five metres of forest. A shorter swipe and a flat ground slam fill the gaps. Every attack runs on a roughly four-second cycle, so there is very little breathing space between blows. The claws and the slam both deal chop damage, so saplings, fences and Workbench roofs come down along with you. It never calls for help and never comes in a pack; a bear is always a single, concentrated problem. The one thing that breaks it is open flame. It avoids fire and turns and runs if it comes within about three metres of any, and that reflex is the most reliable tool you have against it. Left alone, it grazes on Blueberries. It cannot be tamed no matter how much food you scatter, and it heals faster than most creatures, so a bear you wounded and ran from will be close to full health when you come back.
Where to Find It
Bears spawn anywhere in the Black Forest, on open ground between the pines rather than at a ruin or clearing. The game only allows one at a time in a given area, which is why they feel rare. Daytime spawns are capped at one star. The two-star version, with three times the base health and roughly double the damage, only appears after dark, so crossing the forest at night is very different from crossing it in the morning. The likeliest place to find one is a Bear Cave, a Black Forest dungeon where a sleeping bear spawns 75% of the time, though that bear is always plain and unstarred. No boss kill or event gates them, so a new player wandering too far on their first copper run can walk into a creature with more health than anything else in the biome apart from a Troll.

Strengths and Weaknesses
Fire works twice over. Fire damage lands at one and a half times its value, and just seeing a flame drives the bear away, so a Campfire or two in a clearing gives you full control of the fight: it cannot approach the fire, and you can stand next to it and shoot at your leisure. Fire Arrows are the single best thing to spend on one. Otherwise bring a blade, because slash damage hits it at full value while maces, arrows and anything frost are all halved, and Flint Arrows in particular barely scratch it. Its stagger threshold is low for a creature this size, so a parry with a Bronze Buckler or better opens it up, and the counter window is generous. If your shield is not good enough, step back out of the five and a half metre claw arc instead of trading blows. A bronze-geared player with fire support can win, and an Iron Axe behind a Banded Shield makes it comfortable.
Drops
Each kill drops four Hides and a Paw, exactly what the Bear armour and its berserk set bonus are built from.

Level Variants
A creature can spawn at one of three levels, shown as stars next to its name. Each level is rolled separately at spawn, so a two-star is rarer than a one-star. The difference goes beyond the numbers: a starred bear has a different colour or is larger, so you can see it coming.
