Pry an Iolite from a Charred Fortress chest in the Ashlands and it turns the Ash Fang into Storm Fang, whose arrows carry lightning into whatever they hit. It deals 82 pierce and 10 lightning damage. At 92 total damage it ranks 2nd among bows, so it is a step on the ladder rather than the top of it. In the Ashlands that matters more than it sounds. The Charred Marksman, Charred Twitcher and Charred Warlock shrug off fire and pierce alike, but not lightning, so the lightning half is the damage that actually lands. Lightning also hurts the Lava Blob, Morgen and Blob more than most things.
How to Craft
You craft it at a level 4 Black Forge from:
- 1x Ash Fang: made at a Black Forge.
- 5x Flametal: smelted from Flametal Ore in a Blast Furnace.
- 1x Iolite: found in the Charred Fortresses of the Ashlands.
| Name | Image | Biome | Crafting Station | Spawn ID |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ash Fang | Ashlands | Black Forge | spawn BowAshlands
| |
| Flametal | Ashlands | Blast Furnace | spawn FlametalNew
| |
| Iolite | Ashlands | - | spawn GemstoneBlue
|
When to Use It
Use it in the late game. Flametal comes from the Ashlands, the furthest south the map goes.
Upgrades
You can upgrade it 3 times after crafting, and each level wants the station built one step further up than the last. The other figures on this page are for quality 1, so this table is the ladder your own copy sits somewhere on:
| Quality | Crafting Station | Pierce | Lightning | Spirit | Durability | Resources |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Black forge (Level 4) | 82 | 10 | - | 100 | |
| 2 | Black forge (Level 5) | 86 | 10 | 5 | 150 | |
| 3 | Black forge (Level 6) | 90 | 10 | 10 | 200 | |
| 4 | Black forge (Level 7) | 94 | 10 | 15 | 250 |

Properties
This is the only Iolite weapon with a 20% chain chance. Every other one rolls 25% on its primary attack, and the bow is singled out at 20. What it rolls for is chain lightning: 75 damage that ignores skill and cannot be blocked or dodged. It has an 80% chance to bounce to 2 to 4 more targets within 8 metres.
That is 75 unavoidable damage from across a valley. Lightning is also rarely resisted: only the Skugg, the Barka and Kall Fimbulbringer take half damage from it, and none are immune. A bow that triggers it answers the pierce problem the whole class has.
Notes
- Holding the primary attack draws the bow, raising accuracy and damage until you let go. Blocking cancels the draw and keeps the arrow.
- Draw time is 2.5 seconds at skill 0 and 0.5 at 100, but a bow can only fire once every 0.8 seconds, a cap you reach at about skill 85.
- Arrow damage is added to the bow's base damage before any other calculation, so the arrow benefits from skill and quality instead of sitting outside them.
- Upgrading does not raise lightning: it is 10 at quality 1 and still 10 at quality 4. The upgrades raise pierce from 82 to 94 and spirit from 0 to 15.
