Elden Ring - Helms

The cheapest slot on the body: 202 helms weighing 0.7 to 12.3, carrying at most 15 poise and around 8% physical negation, so a helm is chosen for the resistance it plugs or the look it gives rather than for the protection it adds.

Combat

Pros

  • Nothing else in a loadout buys this much for this little weight, and the gap between the lightest helm and the heaviest is under 12 points of Equip Load.
  • It is the natural place to patch a resistance. A helm with high Focus is how a build walks into Mohgwyn Palace without being put to sleep.
  • Several of the best are not armour at all but effect items, and they occupy the slot a plain helm would have taken.

Cons

  • The poise on offer tops out at 15, against 47 on a chest, so a helm alone will not keep you standing through a combo.
  • Negation is a rounding error next to the chest and the legs; four points of physical here is worth less than one point of weight saved elsewhere.
  • A few of the heaviest are locked behind late bosses, by which time the weight is the problem rather than the finding.

Builds

A poise build takes the Bull-Goat Helm and pays 11.3 for it, which only works if the rest of the loadout is already light enough to stay under 70%. Anything else is better served by the lightest helm that carries the resistance the run is short of, because the difference in negation between a 1.0 hat and a 10.0 helm is a few percent and the difference in weight is the whole budget of a pair of gauntlets.

Best Helms

Helm Image Physical Poise Weight Immunity Robustness Focus Vitality Why Take It
Bull-Goat Helm File:Elden-ring bull-goat-helm.webp 7.5 15 11.3 31 35 20 23 The most poise in the slot, and the anchor of any build that means to stand through a combo
Helm of Solitude File:Elden-ring helm-of-solitude.webp 6.8 14 10.3 26 27 42 22 Second in poise, and the 42 Focus is the best answer in the slot to sleep and madness
Mushroom Crown File:Elden-ring mushroom-crown.webp 5.8 9 9.1 46 45 18 22 The highest Immunity of any helm, and it buffs your damage while you are rotted
Prophet Blindfold File:Elden-ring prophet-blindfold.webp 0.2 1 1.0 14 5 27 27 Poise at one point of weight, which is the cheapest point of it anywhere on the body

Notes

  • A set grants no bonus. Wearing the matching helm with the matching chest does nothing the two pieces do not already do apart, so the helm slot is free to be filled by whatever the build actually needs.
  • Altered pieces appear here as separate entries. Altering is done by Boc the Seamster and trims weight along with negation, so an altered helm is lighter rather than better.
  • Headgear that grants an effect rather than protection is listed with the helms because it occupies the same slot, and choosing it is the same decision.
