Beat on the Brat

Beat on the Brat
Type Side Job
Giver Coach Fred
District Little China
Region Watson

Beat on the Brat is the side job that opens V's boxing career in Night City. Coach Fred, a fight promoter, waits inside V's own building, Megabuilding H10 in Little China, Watson, after The Rescue. Once V knocks out his training robot, Fred becomes V's agent and sends V to beat the champions of four districts, ending in a title fight against Razor Hugh in Pacifica.

Story

The Coach

The journal speaks in Fred's voice. V is getting noticed, and people can sense a hunger in V that cannot be satisfied. V wants everything right now, and fights for it when it does not come. To Fred, V is a warrior, and a warrior's place is in the ring. First, though, V has to knock the bolts off his training bot.

The bot is Punchin' Bag, an old military robot rebuilt for boxing. The fight is bare handed, with no weapons. Once the robot falls, Fred offers to represent V in the fighting circles of the city.

The Champions

From then on, the job tracks four fights of its own, each against a local champion: Beat on the Brat: Kabuki, Beat on the Brat: Arroyo, Beat on the Brat: Rancho Coronado and Beat on the Brat: The Glen. Fred's messages paint each opponent. The Arroyo champ is said to be a grade A prick, which makes beating him all the more fun. In Rancho Coronado, the fight takes place in an Animals club, and Fred warns it will be neither easy nor fun. In the Glen, he bets the champion is a Valentino with two golden fists.

Razor Hugh

Once all four champions are down and the main job Transmission is done, Fred calls about the championship. The title fight against Razor Hugh takes place at the Grand Imperial Mall in Pacifica, at one minute past midnight. Before it starts, Fred makes an offer: he doubles V's cash prize if V throws the fight and lets Razor win.

Two people want a word before the bell. A young girl says her father once fought Razor and went down in the third round. Even after the referee stopped the match, Razor kept hitting him, and the injuries ruined her family's life. She wants Razor to pay. In the crowd sit all of V's past opponents, Esquerdo and Certo, César Diego Ruiz and Rhino, along with Viktor Vektor. Viktor shares a secret: Razor recently had new abdominal muscles implanted, and hits to the gut hurt him.

Choices

Throwing the Fight

If V takes Fred's deal and loses, Fred pays the €$ 50,000 prize plus an extra €$ 20,000. Viktor sees it and criticises V for selling out. If V takes the deal but wins anyway, Fred is angry, but still pays the €$ 50,000 prize. Viktor and the other fighters praise V for the win. Turning the deal down and winning also pays €$ 50,000, with the same praise from the crowd.

The Girl

If V wins, V overhears the girl on the phone while leaving the venue. She lied about her family to push V into winning, because she bet money on Razor losing. When V confronts her, she runs away. If V threw the fight, she ignores V.

Rewards

Completing Beat on the Brat pays €$ 50,000.

The title fight pays €$ 50,000, or €$ 70,000 for a thrown fight. Winning it also adds a Boxing Trophy to V's apartment, along with experience and Street Cred.

Tips

Hits to the torso stagger Razor for a few seconds. He is fast and hits hard, but charged punches with Gorilla Arms break his guard again and again and can stun lock him. He also telegraphs his attacks badly. A well timed block turns into a counter with a moment of slowed time, which leaves room for several punches to his gut.
