The Greatsword is a Colossal Sword in Elden Ring. It carries the highest physical attack of any colossal sword in the game.

When to Use It

Mid game. It is found around Caelid, which opens up past Stormveil Castle, so it arrives once a build has taken shape.

Why Players Pick It

Highest physical attack in the class at max standard and at +0, and it takes any affinity with ordinary Smithing Stones. Records 824 attack rating (AR) one-handed and 884 AR two-handed on Heavy at 80 Strength, 171 stance damage on Heavy, and it is looted from a carriage in Caelid rather than gated behind a boss.

Upgrades

Ordinary Smithing Stones carry it all the way to +25, and because it is not a Somber weapon it will also hold a grease or a weapon buff, which is a damage source the unique blades simply do not have.

Build

Its scaling runs Str at C and Dex at E, so Str is the stat worth levelling, and you need Str 31 and Dex 12 before you can lift it. Any Ash of War and any affinity will sit on it, so its scaling can be re-cut towards whichever stat you are already levelling.

Notes

A coarse iron lump of an ultra greatsword. Mows down foes by utilizing its incredible weight. Though handling it likely requires the wielder to have surpassed the realm of the merely human, it is precisely for this reason the weapon is used to slaughter even inhuman foes.
