Elden Ring - Glinstone Staffs

Every sorcery in the game is cast through a staff, and each one is nearly weightless, close to useless in melee and judged almost entirely by a single number, Sorcery Scaling, so Intelligence level decides which staff comes out on top.

Combat

Pros

• Spell damage hangs on one clean lever. The casting staff's Sorcery Scaling sets it, rising with upgrades and with Intelligence above the requirement, so there are no affinity or infusion choices to get wrong.
• Staves cost almost nothing to carry. The whole class weighs between 2.5 and 4.5, with Staff of the Guilty, Crystal Staff, Rotten Crystal Staff, Meteorite Staff and Digger's Staff at the heavy end.
• Off-hand boosters add free damage. Meteorite Staff's 30% gravity bonus and Staff of Loss's 30% invisibility bonus apply while held in the non-casting hand and are multiplied on after the scaling calculation, so Night Comet cast from a Carian Regal Scepter with a Staff of Loss in the other hand hits harder than Night Comet cast from the Staff of Loss itself.
• Physical requirements are trivial. Strength requirements run from 6 (Academy Glintstone Staff) to 10 (Lusat's), and only Carian Glintstone Staff (8), Carian Regal Scepter (10), Carian Glintblade Staff (12) and Staff of Loss (12) ask for any Dexterity at all.

Cons

• Staves offer no real melee. The hardest physical hit in the class is Rotten Crystal Staff's 42 at +0, so a sorcerer needs a second armament for the moment FP runs dry.
• Build flexibility is close to zero. Staves accept exactly one Ash of War, Spinning Weapon, and cannot be greased, spell-buffed or given an affinity, while Lusat's Glintstone Staff cannot take even Spinning Weapon.
• The top staves sit behind steep Intelligence requirements. Azur's and Lusat's both need 52 Intelligence, and Carian Regal Scepter needs 60, the highest Intelligence requirement of any armament in the game.
• The strongest options tax FP, with Lusat's raising the cost of every sorcery by 50% and Azur's by 20%.

Builds

Intelligence is the stat, and it keeps paying.

• The pure-Intelligence ladder runs Demi-Human Queen's Staff from 10 to 40 Intelligence, Carian Sorcery Sword at exactly 41 (it also needs 19 Dexterity), Academy Glintstone Staff from 42 to 67 and Carian Regal Scepter from 68 upward, while Lusat's overtakes all of them from 52 Intelligence for anyone willing to pay its extra FP cost.
• That cost turns Mind into a co-primary stat rather than an afterthought.
• Strength never needs to go past 10, and only a handful of staves need any Dexterity.
• Returns shrink past 60 Intelligence: Meteorite Staff scales 138 at 18, 168 at 30, 193 at 40, 218 at 50, 244 at 60, 258 at 70 and 272 at 80, roughly 25 points per 10 Intelligence up to 60 and about 14 per 10 after that.
• Azur's at +10 reads 254 at 52 Intelligence, 279 at 60, 320 at 70 and 362 at 80.
• Hybrid staves demand two stats and only pay off when both are fed: Prince of Death's Staff needs 18 Intelligence and 18 Faith, Gelmir Glintstone Staff 14 and 14, Maternal Staff 21 Intelligence and 21 Arcane, Albinauric Staff 10 Intelligence and 12 Arcane, and Staff of the Great Beyond 25 Intelligence and 25 Faith, while Staff of the Guilty scales on Faith alone from 12.
• Prince of Death's Staff (430) and Maternal Staff (413) reach those figures only with 80 points in the second stat as well, so they cannot be compared directly with a single-stat 80 Intelligence build.

Notes

• Only the staff that casts the spell contributes Sorcery Scaling, and a second staff in the other hand does nothing to raise it.
• Beyond gravity and invisibility, three more staves carry school boosts that work from either hand: Carian Glintstone Staff adds 15% to Carian sword sorceries, Digger's Staff 20% to Stonedigger sorceries and Carian Regal Scepter 10% to full moon sorceries.
• Falling short of the Intelligence requirement does more than lock the staff, since it also reduces Sorcery Scaling.
• Sorcery Scaling only changes spell damage and has no effect on buff duration or on sorceries that deal no damage.
• Casting speed works separately from damage. Azur's Glintstone Staff grants 40 virtual Dexterity toward casting speed from either hand and speeds up incantations as well, while its FP penalty applies to sorceries alone.
