You need an Iron Pickaxe to mine Obsidian, the black volcanic glass locked inside the Obsidian Deposits scattered across the high slopes of the Mountain.
How to Get It
Deposits look like dark, glassy boulders and turn up more often the higher you climb. An iron pickaxe or better breaks them, but an Antler Pickaxe will not touch them, so obsidian is gated behind smelted iron from the Swamp. Mine from the downhill side, because the deposit shatters as it goes and shards that roll away are lost. The Mountain itself calls for Frost Resistance Mead or wolf gear, and Drakes and wolves will contest the ground while you work. Frost Cave chests occasionally hold obsidian as well, and unlike metal ore it can travel through a Portal.
