The Nekker is a small, burrowing Ogroid that hunts in packs. Nekkers swarm the woods of Velen, including No Man's Land, so they turn up early in the game.
Lore
A city guardsman of Vengerberg named Kurt Hammerbach opens the bestiary entry with some advice. Nekkers live under a certain bridge. If a whole group crosses at once without stopping, there is nothing to fear. If a cart breaks an axle halfway across, the only thing left is to close one's eyes and pray to Melitele.
The bestiary sums up the danger simply. A single Nekker is harmless. A handful is dangerous. A big pack can kill even a veteran monster slayer. The larger, stronger Nekkers known as warriors are especially troublesome, and so is a rare breed called the Phooca.
Behaviour
Nekkers and Phoocas live in the dark woods of damp, misty valleys. Their colonies hold anywhere from one to several dozen members. They dig deep burrows for lairs and link them with narrow tunnels. The tunnels let them move around the colony at great speed.
Nekkers always attack in groups and by surprise. They burst from the ground and try to surround their prey fast, cutting off every escape. Luckily their attacks are mostly disorganized. Nekkers are not very brave, and each one often hesitates before it strikes.
Weaknesses
Coat the blade with Ogroid Oil. Northern Wind bombs work well when the pack closes in.
Use the moment of hesitation. Cut down the boldest Nekkers first, then finish off the ones hanging back. A lone Nekker falls quickly to a flurry of fast attacks, so pick them off one by one. Keep an eye on the ground as well, because more of them can burrow up at any time.
