I Fought the Law is the side job in which mayoral candidate Jefferson Peralez and his wife Elizabeth hire V to find out how the late mayor, Lucius Rhyne, really died. It starts with a call from Elizabeth some time after Life During Wartime, in the Glen, Heywood. V teams up with River Ward, an NCPD detective, and the trail leads to a hidden club called Red Queen's Race. It opens River's storyline and the Peralez storyline.
Story
The Peralezes
Johnny smells a setup from the start. The journal says that a job which begins like a classic mystery, with a mysterious woman calling and refusing to give details, means one of three things: V is dreaming, watching a bad braindance, or being played. He is sure it is not the first two. By the end, he notes that V has broken every rule at once: never take top secret jobs, never work with politicians, and never go to the police. He admits he is a little impressed.
Elizabeth Peralez first asked Judy Álvarez for help with a braindance, and Judy pointed her to V. At the meeting, V gets into the Peralezes' car to talk in private. They suspect that Mayor Rhyne did not die of a heart implant failure, as the official report says, but was murdered. They ask V to examine a braindance of a cyberpsycho attack at City Hall, where Rhyne was due to hold a press conference days before his death. After the braindance, V learns that the deputy mayor, Weldon Holt, is now running in Rhyne's place. Jefferson gives V the contact of River Ward.
River Ward
V meets River at Chubby Buffalo's BBQ in the Glen, where he sits with his partner, Detective Harold Han. Han is fed up with River's refusal to drop the Rhyne case and leaves. River wants to know who V works for, and V admits it is the Peralezes. In River's car, he explains that he suspects someone at the precinct let the attacker, Péter Horváth, go free after his arrest. River has two leads on Red Queen's Race, the club linked to the attack: an informant, and Péter's former employer.
The Leads
At the Cherry Blossom Market, V and River look for Christine Markov, Péter's employer. She says Péter was always a bit unhinged and gave wild speeches about the mayor, until one day he turned up with the latest implants, paid for by someone who had "finally seen his worth". Back at River's car, some Tyger Claws are poking around, having recognised it as his.
The informant, Neil White, works at a sex shop in Vista del Rey. He runs as soon as V asks about the club, but River corners him in the alley. Neil reveals where the club is, and that it closed shortly after Rhyne's death.
Red Queen's Race
The club sits in a warehouse in Charter Hill. River is NCPD and cannot enter without a warrant, so V goes in alone. The Animals guard the place. The entrance is hidden inside a shipping container, where a lift goes down to the club. In the office on the upper floor, a computer holds a security recording that shows what really happened. The Animals' boss can be choked out and questioned. She says the gang was hired to wreck the place, and is still hanging around because of the one who hired them.
The Cover Up
Back at Chubby Buffalo's, River confronts Han. Han will not say who ordered the cover up. He says this is how Night City works, and that he is protecting his family, the NCPD. River realises that Han knows, and plans to report it to Internal Affairs, though Han warns it will only make River a target. River is set on reopening the case.
V reports to Elizabeth, who asks V to come to the Peralezes' penthouse in Charter Hill. In the lift, Johnny advises V to tell them nothing, because whatever is going on runs deeper than they realise. In the penthouse, V tells the couple what V found.

Choices
The Tyger Claws
Staying quiet at River's car lets him handle the Tyger Claws, and they leave peacefully. Butting in usually starts a fight. A Streetkid V can calm them down with a special answer.
What to Tell the Peralezes
Johnny advises keeping quiet, but V can tell the couple what was found and name Holt as the man behind it. V is paid either way, and the story with the Peralezes continues in Dream On.
River
River's storyline continues in The Hunt. Being straight with him in this job helps the friendship, and a feminine V can later romance him.
Rewards
Completing I Fought the Law pays €$ 17,140, 2,826 experience and 4,238 Street Cred. It also rewards Peralez Campaign Poster.
The Peralez campaign poster is added to the memorabilia in V's apartment. After the job, a hidden cache of Militech bodies by three burning vans appears in Charter Hill.
Tips
The job needs a Street Cred level of at least 9 before Elizabeth calls. Getting a shock from the braindance wreath before watching the security footage makes the dialogue that follows funnier.
