The Greataxe is a Greataxe in Elden Ring. It has the highest physical attack of any greataxe in the game. It turns up early in a run, in Limgrave.

The Greataxe is akin to a huge lump of iron, the weapon of choice of badland chieftains, too heavy to be wielded by those of merely ordinary strength. It sits in the chest of a carriage pulled by two trolls along the road near the Waypoint Ruins in Limgrave, and the carriage stops only once both trolls fall. It has the highest damage per swing of its class for builds up to 80 Strength, and its charged heavy attacks hit enormously hard, at the cost of slower swings that make chained attacks harder. It needs 30 Strength, or 20 when two-handed, scales with Strength and Dexterity at D, and comes with Barbaric Roar, which raises attack power by 10% and turns its heavy attack into a three-hit combo. It suits an early Strength build fighting large, slow enemies with lots of HP.

Stats

Nothing else in the Greataxe class matches its 151 base physical, and it reaches roughly 369 attack rating at max upgrade. It weighs 13.0 and comes with Barbaric Roar, and it can be in hand within the first hour, which makes it one of the best early damage pickups in the class for a Strength build.

How to Get Greataxe Guide

Inside the carriage hauled by two Trolls on the road close to the Waypoint Ruins in Limgrave.
The carriage must be stopped before the chest can be opened, requiring both trolls be killed.
These trolls will not pursue the Tarnished, instead choosing to focus on pulling the carriage.
Instead, they will stomp to try and punish the Tarnished for being attacked before going back to pulling, leaving the Tarnished to focus simply on avoiding being truck by their retort between attacks.

Skill

Barbaric Roar costs 16 FP. The wielder lets out a bestial roar that grants a 40 second weapon buff, raising physical attack power. While it lasts, heavy and charged heavy attacks turn into a savage three-hit combo that chains into a further follow-up shaped by the weapon class. The Roar Medallion adds to the damage of these combos, and as a weapon buff it replaces greases and armament-buffing spells rather than stacking with them. It is the weapon's default Ash of War, so another can take its place.

Suggested Build

Two-handed early for its requirement, it leans on charged heavy attacks for enormous damage per swing.
