Trophy Scavenger Matron Head
Flame 3

The Scavenger Matron is the second boss of Enshrouded and the leader of a Scavenger camp. Her helmet is the trophy the Flame Altar needs for Flame level 3, so she is the gate out of the Springlands. Two variants exist: the Gorger throws poison in three directions, the Grizzler calls in reinforcements.

Scavenger Matron Location

A ring-shaped Scavenger fort a short way northeast of the Springlands Ancient Spire, directly south of the Mistbury Catacombs and southeast of the Farmer's Ancient Vault. The Matron waits on the raised top of the hill; the ramp up is on the side facing east. The Alchemist's quest The Alchemist's Rumors sends you here.

Region Location Details
Springlands Hill of Scavengers North-east of the Springlands spire; the quest The Alchemist's Rumors marks it.
Revelwood Glenwood's End In the far north of the region; the quest A Crucial Investigation marks it.

Abilities

Ability Effect Counter
Acid Throw Pulls green acid vials from her belt and throws them in two waves; they burst in an arc of explosions in front of her and leave poison on the ground. It reaches far but has a maximum range. Keep running in one direction around her as she throws; running away from her gets you hit more often than circling. Standing beyond her throwing range is also safe.
Acid Vomit A close-range spew of poison that can kill an under-geared player in one hit. She keeps tracking you until the moment she releases it. Watch for a distinct gurgling sound while she stands still with her head pulled back, then run well away and to the side.
Three-Way Poison (Gorger) The Gorger variant hurls poison in three directions toward her target. Step sideways out of the middle line and keep space to move laterally.
Horn Call (Grizzler) The Grizzler variant blows a horn to call reinforcements; in the higher-level fights these arrive as groups of three or four wolves. Pull the adds away from her and kill them before going back to the boss.
Close-Range Slam Matrons also attack in melee when you are near, with a large, clearly telegraphed close-range hit. Dodge on the wind-up; staying tight behind her avoids it, since she turns slowly.

Resistances and Weaknesses

Weaknesses:

  • Fire damage works well against her, from fire spells or a fire wand.
  • Cutting and piercing damage are effective.
  • She moves and turns slowly, which makes kiting and circling her easy.

Resistances:

  • Resists explosive damage.
  • Resists acid damage.
  • Her head is armored, so shots to the head do little; aim at the body or belly instead.

How to Beat the Scavenger Matron

  1. Clear the Scavengers and wolves in the camp before engaging, so they cannot join the fight. Luring one or two at a time away from the camp works well.
  2. Eat food, drink water and take potions before stepping into her arena; at the Hill of Scavengers a mammoth skull on stakes marks the edge of her range.
  3. A Spectral Shield (Blacksmith, Wards section; 4 Metal Sheets, 6 Bonemeal, 3 Charcoal) gives full poison resistance, so you can block her poison with it raised.
  4. Pick one of two distances: stay far back and use cover such as crates, rocks and rubble while attacking at range, or stick right behind her. The middle distance is where her slam and poison reach you.
  5. Melee builds can circle her closely in one direction and hit her back; attack in short bursts and back off to recover stamina.
  6. Ranged builds can fire from the arena entrance arch or another high spot, but sniping from far below can make her reset.

Improved Grappling Hook recipe - 1x

Her helmet is the boss item for strengthening the Flame from level 2 to level 3, which raises Shroud time to 7 minutes and the Shroud passage level to 3. Killing the Hill of Scavengers Matron also unlocks the Improved Grappling Hook (crafted at the Carpenter; it costs less stamina and reaches further). Extra helmets make wall trophies at the Hunter: plain (1 helmet), Bronze (3), Iron (5) and Gold (7).

Lore

A lore note found at the Hill of Scavengers, written by a captive, says Scavenger Matrons swollen by gluttony inject themselves with Elixir; these Gorgers spit poison and throw corrupted vials. Scavengers in general are people driven mad by heavy Elixir use, attacking anything in their search for more. The Alchemist hears that a Scavenger group in the Springlands is abusing the Elixir and running cruel experiments, which sends you to the Hill of Scavengers. The helmet's description says she is less frightening without a head, though her acid smell remains.

Notes

  • The Scavenger Matron is the second boss most players meet, after the Fell Thunderbrute.
  • She is not a single enemy but a boss type that sits at the top of large Scavenger camps; not every camp has one.
  • There are three kinds: a plain melee Matron, the poison-throwing Gorger and the reinforcement-calling Grizzler.
  • The Matron at the Hill of Scavengers is a Gorger.
  • Later Matrons are stronger but use mostly the same attacks.
  • Matrons respawn after several in-game days, or on logging back into a solo world, so the weaker ones can be farmed for helmets.
  • The Alchemist's Rumors requires character level 7 and the quest Powerful Alchemy; it rewards the helmet, the Improved Grappling Hook and 75 XP.
  • A Crucial Investigation rewards the helmet and 75 XP.
