Enshrouded - Locations

The map of Embervale

Embervale is the world of Enshrouded: one handcrafted map, the same in every save, split into regions and sub-regions. Difficulty climbs from the meadows of the south-west to the jungle lakes of the north. This page covers the world as a whole, the Shroud, the Flame levels that open it up, the spires that reveal the map and how to get around, with a page for each region.

Embervale is built by hand, not generated: Keen Games chose a fixed world for its storytelling. The terrain is voxel based, so you can dig and build almost anywhere, but changes outside a Flame Altar's zone reset after 30 minutes or a restart. Up to 16 players can share a world.

A red barrier wall marks the edge of the playable area.

You start in the Springlands in the south-west corner, with the Low Meadows on their eastern side. Revelwood lies to the north, with the Blackmire swamp in its north-west. The Nomad Highlands hold the centre and the Kindlewastes desert runs along the eastern edge. The Albaneve Summits rise in the north-east, and the Veilwater Basin sits in the centre-north between the Blackmire and the mountains. Difficulty climbs roughly clockwise from the start.

The old capital, Pikemead's Reach, stands in Revelwood, drowned in Shroud and held by the Fell.

Interactive Map and Locations

The map shows the Ancient Spires, one per region, the Cinder Vault and Longkeep where you start, the Ancient Vaults of the survivors, the bosses whose trophies raise the Flame, Pikemead's Reach and the Hollow Halls. Each region page has its own map centred on its spire.

The Shroud

The Shroud is a corrupting fog that fills Embervale's valleys, canyons and basins, while hilltops, mesas and towns on high ground stay clear. Every region is split into open ground above and Shrouded pockets below; the Kindlewastes is cut in two by it. The fog rises from Elixir Wells, each with a Shroud Root at the bottom, and felling a root gives skill points to every Flameborn nearby.

Stepping into the fog starts a timer at the top of the screen, which resets the moment you leave. You get 5 minutes at Flame level 1 and one more per Flame level, up to 13 minutes at level 9. When it runs out, the Shroud consumes you.

Red, Deadly Shroud drains the timer far faster and blocks the way until the Flame is strong enough: each Flame level raises your Shroud Passage level by one and opens that tier of red fog. Exploding puffballs turn the fog red around them, and red Shroud mud pulls you down when you walk into it.

Ways to stay longer:

  • Strengthen the Flame: +1 minute per level.
  • Shroud Survival Flask: +2 minutes for 45 minutes. The greater flask gives +4.
  • Glowing hourglass capsules in the fog restore time.
  • Standing by a Return Beacon inside the fog refills the timer.
  • Ranger skills Inner Fires and Relentless Flame raise the limit, and the Gem of Hopeful Embers tops it up when it runs low.
  • Some armour lowers the limit, the Guard of the North set among them.

Flame Levels

The Flame level belongs to the world, not the player, and never drops, even if every altar goes out. Each upgrade at a Flame Altar costs Sparks, materials and a boss trophy. It gives +1 to every attribute, +1 minute in the Shroud, +1 Shroud Passage level, more altar slots, more water and room for more survivors. Level 9 is the cap.

Level Altars Water Time Survivors Sparks Materials Trophy
1 - - 5 min - - - -
2 4 1 6 min 0 1 -
3 6 1 7 min 2 5 Scavenger Matron Helmet
4 7 5 8 min 4 10 Fell Wispwyvern Head
5 8 10 9 min 6 20 Fell Monstrosity Head
6 9 20 10 min 8 40 Fell Sicklescythe Head
7 10 30 11 min 10 40 Fell Cyclops Head
8 10 40 12 min 12 50 Fell Dragon Youngling Head
9 10 50 13 min 14 60 Hydrak'Dal Head

Ancient Spires

An Ancient Spire stands near the middle of every region and sub-region. Only Ancients and Flameborn can enter them; inside are climbing puzzles, locked doors and traps, themed on the biome in the later spires. At the top you speak with the Flame, which unlocks the spire for fast travel and marks the region's Ancient Obelisks. Each obelisk then marks the region's Shroud Roots and Flame Shrines. From the top you can glide out over the whole region.

Flame Shrines and Sanctums give Sparks and refill over time. The yield rises by region: 1 in the Springlands, 2 in Revelwood, 3 in the Nomad Highlands, 4 in the Kindlewastes, 5 in the Albaneve Summits and 6 in the Veilwater Basin. Sparks pay for every Flame upgrade and, from the Nomad Highlands on, open Night Sanctums.

Every region holds Night Sanctums, and one Night Sanctum per region houses a high-tier Gem Forge.

Fast Travel

You can fast travel from anywhere outside the Shroud to any spire you have lit or any of your Flame Altars: open the map, pick the destination and choose Fast Travel. The starting altar is on the list too. Return Beacons are respawn points rather than destinations; the first one stands past the caves after the Cinder Vault.

Getting Around

  • Glider: built at the Workbench from 8 Shroud Wood, 2 Animal Fur, 2 String and 2 Shroud Spores, once you first pick up spores or Shroud Wood. Updrafts lift you; the Updraft skill charges over the first seconds of a glide, and the Kindlewastes has natural updraft zones. The Advanced Glider and the Ghost Glider come later, and the Ghost Glider with Flame level 6 opens the Albaneve Summits.
  • Grappling Hook: built at the Workbench from 4 Metal Scraps, 7 String and 10 Shroud Spores, at 40 stamina a use. It swings across chasms and pulls you up to grapple points. The Improved Grappling Hook comes from the Carpenter.
  • Climbing works on any terrain and costs stamina.
  • You can swim and dive. The Veilwater Basin has underwater caves, and A Tool For Underwater Mining gives the hook an underwater upgrade.
  • Frost: high in the Albaneve Summits a frost timer runs, 40 seconds plus 3 minutes 10 seconds per level of frost protection. It refills lower down or by fire and lava, and running out kills you.
