The Asksvin looks like something between a plucked bird and a huge mutated Neck. It stalks the interior of the Ashlands on two long legs and hits like a battering ram. It is one of the biome's more ordinary threats and also its most valuable animal: a wild one will pounce on you from six metres away, while a tamed one will carry you straight across a lava field without taking a scratch.
Behaviour
A wild Asksvin spots you from a distance and closes in hard instead of circling. Its Headbutt is a running charge that covers six metres and deals heavy blunt damage. The Pounce is the dangerous one: it crouches and wiggles for a split second, then springs the same distance for half as much damage again. The Pounce comes round every four seconds while its other attacks take eight, so it is the attack that actually kills players. Up close it sweeps its head back and bites through a wide arc for mixed blunt and slash damage, which also tears into wood and stone, so a quickly built wall will not protect you. It does not summon anything, flee when wounded or sleep through your approach. Tamed Asksvin follow you, cannot hurt you with their own attacks, and become rideable once you fit a saddle, though you cannot swing a weapon from the saddle. Lava does not harm them, tame or wild, and that is the whole point of owning one.
Where to Find It
Look inland. Asksvin spawn in the middle of the Ashlands, out on the open ash and around the lava flows rather than along the coast, and they are common enough that any serious trip will run into several. Daytime is safer, because the game only allows a couple at a time and caps them at one star. After dark the cap comes off: two-star Asksvin appear with three times the health and roughly double the damage, and these night spawns vanish at dawn unless you have penned one or already started taming it. Reaching the biome is all it takes to find them. Once you have a breeding pair, eggs hatch in half an hour when kept warm, and the young take another fifty minutes to grow up. That is how most players get a mount, rather than wrestling a wild adult into a pen.
| Where and When | At Once | How Often | Stars |

| Middle of the Ashlands during the nighttime, despawn at dawn | 2 | Common | Yes |
Strengths and Weaknesses
Leave your fire weapons in the chest for this fight: the fire damage the rest of the Ashlands demands is halved against the Asksvin, and so is poison. Everything else lands at full value, so frost, lightning or simply your heaviest physical weapon is the right choice. Timing decides the fight more than damage type. The Pounce is telegraphed by a small wiggle and the charge by a lowered head, and both are better dodged than blocked, since 150 blunt through a shield still staggers you into whatever comes next. Hit hard during the eight-second gaps after a bite or a headbutt, then back off before the four-second Pounce comes round again. Most importantly, it has no ranged attack at all, so a bow from twenty metres is completely safe as long as you have ground to retreat across. Mistlands tier gear and a reliable dodge will win the fight, and Ashlands armour makes it forgiving. If you want to tame it instead, drop Smoke Puffs, Vineberry Clusters or Fiddleheads and get behind something solid, because it will keep pouncing until it settles.
Drops
Hide and Tails are the useful drops from every kill, and the Trophy drops roughly one time in ten.

Level Variants
A creature can spawn at one of three levels, shown as stars next to its name. Each level is rolled separately at spawn, so a two-star is rarer than a one-star. The difference goes beyond the numbers: a starred Asksvin has a different colour or is larger, so you can see it coming.
