The Lox is the Plains in animal form: enormous, slow to notice you, and impossible to reason with once it has. With a thousand health, a 130 slash bite and a stomp that chews through stone, it ends most first visits to the biome. Yet a handful of Cloudberries turns the same beast into livestock.

Behaviour

Lox live in herds that wander a loop and drift back to the same patch of ground. They are hostile to everything out there, Fulings included, so the Plains will sometimes sort itself out if you stand back and watch. Their eyesight and hearing are both poor, so you can slip past one at a distance or open with a sneak attack that hits far harder than a normal one. Once a Lox is awake it charges, and it covers ground faster than its bulk suggests. Up close it bites in a wide arc for 130 slash every four seconds. Every twelve seconds it rears up and stomps for 120 blunt in a ring around itself, and that hit also carries chop and pickaxe damage, so it takes out a fence, a wall or a terrace along with you. It does not flee, it barely staggers, and it can attack while swimming, so water is not the escape it usually is. It handles narrow ground badly, though, and a herd will bunch up and stall on anything it cannot simply walk over.

Where to Find It

Lox spawn on the open grassland of the Plains, usually in herds of two or three that keep to a home range. On the flat you can see them from a long way off. They are uncommon rather than everywhere, capped at three in an area, and they spawn at any hour. They often graze close to Fuling Villages, which is how a manageable fight turns into an unmanageable one very quickly. Nothing gates them beyond reaching the biome, so they are out there from your first minute ashore, which is also the minute you are least prepared for them. Tamed pairs breed happily, so a fourth can just as easily appear inside your own pen as out in the wild.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Use fire and pierce damage, delivered from a distance. Fire does half again as much damage, while blunt, slash and frost are all halved. That makes the sword and mace that carried you through the Mountains the wrong tools entirely. Fire Arrows from a decent bow are the right one, and a spear or an atgeir is the melee answer, since pierce goes through unhindered. Open with a sneak shot, then kite: its poor senses and clumsiness on broken ground let you circle, shoot and keep moving almost indefinitely. A dug ditch holds a herd nicely, but the stomp throws damage across a gap the animal cannot cross, and it will chew up the far bank and whatever is built on it. Blocking a 130 damage bite takes a Black Metal Tower Shield, and parrying is not worth trying against that stagger threshold. With Padded armour and a full quiver this fight is routine; with iron and a sword it is a corpse run.

  • It takes extra damage from Fire.
  • It resists Blunt, Slash and Frost damage.
  • It is immune to Spirit damage.

Drops

Lox Meat is solid everyday health food, but the pelts are the real prize, because the cape they make gives you frost resistance and a good amount of armour.

Notes

  • The name Lox blends the words 'lizard' and 'ox', which fits their design.
  • The trader Haldor keeps a tamed Lox named Halstein in his camp. Hildir has two tamed Lox named Blåbär and Hallon.
  • Walking up to a wild Lox always frightens it and turns it aggressive toward you.
  • A Lox can throw its melee damage a long way forward by rearing up and smashing down with its front hooves. Keep this in mind when you dig ditches to block them: a Lox does not need to cross a narrow ditch to destroy structures on the other side.
  • Lox Meat is very healthy and a good basic HP food. Lox Meat Pie gives nearly the same health and stamina as Serpent Stew, and those two are the best all-round health foods before the Mistlands. Lox food has one advantage over Serpent food: you can tame and breed Lox, while Serpents have to be found.
