The Hen is the one creature in the game you have to bring in yourself. It never spawns wild in the Meadows or anywhere else. Instead you buy or loot an egg, warm it by a fire, and the chick that hatches grows into a hen. What you get is a steady supply of feathers, meat and more eggs rather than a threat.
Behaviour
Hens are tame from the moment they hatch and always underfoot. A hen potters about its pen in short bursts, crowds anyone carrying seeds, and settles near fire and shelter, which is also where it needs to be before it will lay. It has exactly one attack, a 10 blunt peck, and it uses it on whatever is bothering it, you included, though the damage is closer to an insult than a wound. Keep two well fed, sheltered birds near each other and they breed by laying eggs instead of having live young, which is the whole reason to keep them. They panic and scatter when something hostile gets into the pen, and they do not last long against anything bigger than themselves.
Where to Find It
Hens only exist where a player has put one, which in practice means a roofed pen with a fire in it, usually tucked into a base in the Meadows. It all starts with an Egg. You can buy one from Haldor for 1500 coins once Yagluth is dead, or find one in a chest on the bottom floor of a Sealed Tower in the Plains. Place the egg on its own rather than as part of a stack, under a roof and next to a heat source. It hatches into a chick after about thirty minutes, and the chick needs roughly two days to grow up. Two eggs are enough to start a self sustaining flock, and hens never spawn with stars.
Strengths and Weaknesses
You do not fight a hen, you butcher one, and the game is unusually strict about it: ordinary weapons cannot harm a grown bird at all. Only a Butcher Knife works on it, so a stray sword swing or an arrow aimed at a passing wolf will never cost you the flock. Indirect damage still counts, though, so keep them clear of an obliterator and out of reach of anything that leaves a poison cloud behind. Chicks are fragile and best left alone until they have grown into something worth the meat. The real danger comes from outside: Greylings and raiders will reach the birds through any gap, so build the pen with solid walls and a door instead of trusting luck.
- It ignores Spirit.
Drops
A hen is worth far more alive than dead, but a butchered bird still drops Feathers and Chicken Meat for the Cauldron.

Notes
- Because Hens are tameable animals, players can only damage them with a Butcher Knife.
- Players can still damage Hens and Chickens indirectly with the lightning strike AoE of an Obliterator.
- Chicken Meat goes into Honey Glazed Chicken, one of the most potent HP-boosting foods of the Mistlands tier.
- Hens come in 3 colors: white, brown, and white and brown. Each color seems to appear about 33% of the time.
- Hens are unique among tameable animals because they never produce live young. They lay an Egg instead, which has to be warmed near a heat source before it hatches into a Chicken.
