The Greydwarf Brute is what the Black Forest sends once the ordinary Greydwarfs have failed. It is taller than you, slab-shouldered, and swings a rock the size of its own torso. With 150 health and 30 damage a swing, it is the first thing in the game that can kill a fully fed character in three connected blows. The pink-barked starred versions push that to 450 health and 60 a hit, a real wall for anyone still wearing leather.
Behaviour
A Brute is slow, direct and fully committed. It has a single attack, an overhead slam of its club arm through a downward arc about three metres long. Despite the shape of that weapon, the slam counts as slash rather than blunt, a leftover quirk from the creature's original design. It closes in at a lumbering walk, never throws anything, never calls for help and never runs away, and it will chase you across half the biome rather than give up. The long, obvious wind-up on the slam is its whole weakness. It is also heavily built and takes a lot more punishment before staggering than a normal Greydwarf does. Brutes rarely arrive alone, because whatever spawned one usually spawned a crowd of lesser Greydwarfs with it, and the real danger is getting shoved back into that pack while you are busy timing the big one's swing. Like the rest of its family it is mostly a night creature, and one that spawned after dark despawns at dawn if it has not found you first.
Where to Find It
Brutes belong to the Black Forest at night, where at most one is loose at a time and it despawns at sunrise. They also appear as rare fixed spawns near some of the abandoned stone structures in the biome, the one way to plan on meeting one in broad daylight. Now and then they come out of nests mixed in with the usual stream of smaller Greydwarfs. In worlds where The Elder has fallen, they start spawning at night in the Meadows too, always without stars. The other dependable spawn is the raid that warns you the forest is moving, available before The Elder is beaten, where Brutes are very common rather than lone wanderers. Night spawns in the Black Forest only carry stars beyond roughly two thousand metres from the centre of the world, and a two star in vivid pink bark is worth retreating from until your gear catches up.
| Where and When | At Once | How Often | Stars |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anywhere in Black Forest during the nighttime, despawn at dawn | 1 | - | After 2000 meters from the world center |
| Anywhere in Meadows during the nighttime after defeating The Elder, despawn at dawn | 1 | - | No |
| Rare spawn point near some abandoned structures in Black Forest | - | One time | Yes |
| Rarely from Greydwarf nests in Black Forest | 3 | Every 12 seconds | Yes |
| During "The forest is moving..." event before defeating The Elder | 1 | Very common | No |
Strengths and Weaknesses
Fire works again, and heavily, because a Brute takes double damage from it. Fire Arrows fired into it during its approach are the cheapest kill in the whole biome, and two or three will often strip half its health before it reaches you. If you have to fight it in melee, the single overhead slam is easy to read. A parry with a decent shield leaves it wide open for a fully charged riposte, and parrying is far more reliable than trading blows with something that hits for 30. Backing up and circling works well too, since it is slow, turns badly and has no threat beyond melee reach. Poison deals only half and spirit damage is ignored completely, so silver weapons and Poison Arrows are the wrong tools even once you own them. From full bronze upwards the fight is comfortable as long as you are not flanked. In leather or rags, shoot it from across a clearing and keep walking backwards.
Drops
Ancient Seeds are the one drop here you cannot gather in quantity elsewhere, since The Elder is summoned with them. The Dandelions are a useful bonus for early meads.
| Item | Image | Base | 1 Star | 2 Star |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ancient seed | 33% | 2 (66%) | 4 | |
| Dandelion | 1 | 2 | 4 | |
| Greydwarf Brute trophy | 10% | 10% | 10% | |
| Greydwarf eye | 2 (50%) | 4 | 8 | |
| Stone | 2 | 4 | 8 | |
| Wood | 3-4 | 6-8 | 12-16 |
Level Variants
A creature can spawn at one of three levels, shown as stars beside its name. Each level is rolled separately when it spawns, so a two-star is rarer than a one-star. The difference goes beyond the numbers: a starred Greydwarf Brute is recoloured or larger, so you can see it coming.
| Level | Stars | Image | Health | Damage | Drops |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | - | 150 | 100% | x1 | |
| 2 | ⭐ | 300 | 150% | x2 | |
| 3 | ⭐⭐ | 450 | 200% | x4 |
Notes
- One-star Greydwarf Brutes have pinker bark than the standard Brute's brown, and two-star Brutes have even more vivid pink bark.
- Brutes deal slash damage despite their club-shaped arm. The Brute's original design attacked with normal claws, and its damage type was never changed to match the new weapon.
