The Toad Prince is one of the Cursed Ones. It is a man turned into a huge, bloodthirsty toad. It lurks in the sewers beneath Oxenfurt and poisons the city's water. It is the first boss of the Hearts of Stone story, met in a main quest with a suggested level of 32.
Lore
The bestiary entry opens with an old folk tale. A girl walks to the edge of a pond and finds a small green frog among the lilies. The frog wears a golden crown on its warty head. Charmed, the girl picks it up and kisses it. The frog turns into a handsome prince and asks for her hand in marriage.
Timeless tales carry a grain of truth, or so the folk of Oxenfurt wanted to believe. When word spread that a monstrous toad lived in the city sewers, some women went hunting it. They hoped for romance and a better life. Their stories ended badly. The creature was no sweet little frog but a bloodthirsty beast. It never let them close enough for a kiss. It ate them instead, along with anything else that strayed into its slimy lair.
Rumors also said the sewer monster was an enchanted prince. It sounded like a fairy tale, but the rumors were true. As the Toad Prince dies, it turns back into a man: the crown prince of Ofier. A unit of heavily armed Ofieri soldiers, led by a mage, arrives moments later. They take its killer prisoner and set sail for Ofier, where an execution awaits.
Behaviour
The Toad Prince makes its lair deep in the lower level of the Oxenfurt sewers. Drowners crowd the tunnels around it. Its venom seeps into the city's water and spreads sickness through the town.
Weaknesses
Coat the silver sword with Cursed Oil. Drink Golden Oriole before going down, because the Toad Prince spits venom that poisons on contact. Yrden is its great weakness. Set the trap and wait for the toad to land inside it. The trap holds it in place for a short time, which is the moment for strong attacks.
The Toad Prince has three main attacks. Its long tongue whips out at range and hits very hard, so time a dodge for it. It also spits globs of venom, often several in a row. Roll away from each glob and use the rolls to move closer for a few quick strikes. Last, it leaps high and crashes down on its target. The landing hurts everything around it, so roll out to the left or right.
This is a tough fight and it takes a while. Expect the toad to hop around the lair a lot. Yrden can be cast again and again, so set a fresh trap each time it breaks free.
The Toad Prince Map Location and Quest Guide
- Read the notice board outside the Seven Cats Inn, where a man pins up a new contract.
- Go to the Garin Estate and talk to Olgierd von Everec about the contract. Haggle the reward up to 450 crowns.
- Climb down the well into the Oxenfurt sewers and clear out the Drowners.
- Search the sewers with the Witcher Senses and go to the spot where the monster attacked Shani and the Redanian soldiers.
- Find the key to the sewer gates on a dead soldier. Blast any blocking obstacles with Aard.
- Search the lower level of the sewers and fight through more Drowners to the monster's lair.
- Kill the Toad Prince. Drink Golden Oriole and pin it with Yrden.
- After the capture and the shipwreck, meet Master Mirror at midnight at the crossroads beneath the willows. Then go see Olgierd for the reward.

The Toad Prince is the monster of Evil's Soft First Touches, the first main quest of Hearts of Stone. It starts at the notice board by the Seven Cats Inn, where a man pins up a new contract. Olgierd von Everec, who lives at the nearby Garin Estate, wants a monster in the Oxenfurt sewers killed. Olgierd pays 450 crowns for the job. In the sewers, the hunt runs into Shani, an Oxenfurt medic. The monster attacked her and a group of Redanian soldiers there.
The hunt is only the start of the story. When the toad dies, its body releases a poisonous gas that knocks its killer out. The Ofieri soldiers then capture the witcher, who wakes up on a ship bound for Ofier. On board, the merchant Gaunter O'Dimm appears and offers help in return for an open promise. O'Dimm leaves a mark on the witcher's face as the price. A storm then wrecks the ship on the rocks. Fighting the surviving Ofieri warriors afterwards is optional. The quest ends with a midnight meeting with Master Mirror at the crossroads beneath the willows and a visit to Olgierd's burning estate.
