The Gem Forge is an Ancient device fuelled by Archaic Essence that inserts, removes, upgrades and recycles weapon gems.

Every biome has several forges; the strongest sits inside a Night Sanctum.

What's Inside

Upgrading raises a gem's strength; recycling returns Archaic Essence based on the gem level and the forge's region.
Gems can be removed intact and moved to another weapon.
Most forges stand in the Shroud.

How to Unlock

The Alchemist's quest Finding And Using A Gem Forge leads to the first forge in the Springlands. The quest opens after Powerful Alchemy. Fell enemies hold the forge, and they carry a resource called Archaic Essence. Their footprints lead to a nearby Shroud Lair, where a Fell Banshee haunts the heart of the cave. Clearing the lair finishes the quest and rewards Archaic Essence and a Gem of Bleeding, enough to set a first gem.

Rewards

The quest gives Archaic Essence, a Gem of Bleeding and 150 XP.
Each forge caps how high it raises a gem: Springlands 10 to 12, Revelwood 15 to 18, Nomad Highlands 20 to 22, Kindlewastes 30 to 32, Albaneve Summits 35 to 40, Veilwater Basin 45 to 50.
Each biome's forges use that biome's Archaic Essence tier.

Tips

The strongest forge of each region stands inside a Night Sanctum. Upgrades there also cost less than at a regular forge in the same region. Recycling a gem pays back Archaic Essence of the forge's own region, and higher-level gems pay back more. That makes a late forge the best place to recycle old gems. Cinder's Cradle has one forge in the lower wasteland and one on the sky islands, and both work with Archaic Essence VII.
