The Spear of the Impaler is a Great Spear in Elden Ring.

When to Use It

Shadow of the Erdtree. It is found around Land of Shadow in the expansion, which opens only once Starscourge Radahn and Mohg, Lord of Blood are beaten.

Why Players Pick It

Highest fire damage in the class and, per, its strong, dashing and mounted strong attacks throw the spear as a ranged projectile for zero FP; a full charge makes it explode and set the ground alight, and the projectile damage is boosted by the Smithing Talisman. The bill is 35 Dex and 18 Fai. Remembrance of the Impaler.

Upgrades

It takes Somber Smithing Stones rather than the common kind, one per level up to +10, and it keeps its own skill for good: no Ash of War will replace it and no affinity will re-cut its scaling.

Skill

Messmer's Assault costs 15 / 9 FP. A fierce succession of attacks using a flame-coated spear tip. Repeated inputs allow up to two follow-up attacks. The final move thrusts the spear into the ground, causing countless spears to form in the surrounding area. It belongs to this weapon alone: no Ash of War will move it onto anything else, and nothing will replace it here.

Build

Its scaling runs Str at E, Dex at C and Fai at D, so Dex is the stat worth levelling, and you need Str 14, Dex 35 and Fai 18 before you can lift it. Because the skill is its own, the build has to come to the weapon rather than the other way round.

Notes

Weapon of Messmer the Impaler. A greatspear with a warped blade in the shape of undulating flame. Remade by the forging arts of the realm of shadow, this weapon can be thrown by executing a strong attack, dashing strong attack, or mounted strong attack. Charge the attack to produce flame on impact.
