Smithing Master Hewg in Roundtable Hold or War Counselor Iji in Liurnia of the Lakes performs the upgrade. Each level of a special armament takes one somber stone of the matching grade. The upgrade also costs runes.

"Large polar smithing stone drained of color. Strengthens special armaments to +8. Special armaments with unique characteristics cannot be strengthened with colored smithing stones. Number of steps and amount strengthened differ from standard equipment."
