Something died in the Plains and did not stay down. The Vile is a Bear stripped back to grey hide and exposed ribs, with twelve hundred health, and it only walks after dark. Its armour is what makes it a wall rather than a nuisance: blunt, slash, pierce and frost all land at half value. The Black Metal weapon that folds a Fuling in three hits will need a dozen here, and the Vile answers with 150 damage a swing.

Behaviour

It is nocturnal and it roams, ambling along until something crosses its path, then it comes at you with the full weight of a bear behind it. It has five attacks and none of them are light. A lunging bite reaches four metres for 20 slash and 130 pierce. A rearing claw slam hits for 130 slash out to five and a half metres, and single left and right swipes hit for 120 each at the same reach. A two-hit combo trades power for a second chance at you. A stationary ground slam deals 150 blunt in a two and a half metre circle on a twelve second cooldown. Most of these recover in four seconds, so there is very little quiet time once it is on you. It does not call others and it will not run from you, but it will run from fire: bring any fire source within three metres and it backs away. A Torch in the off-hand is a mixed blessing, since it still attacks you, but it jerks the swing aside at the last instant and misses a great deal. Left alone, it grazes on fallen Blueberries and ignores living bears entirely. It cannot be tamed, and it quietly regenerates a full health bar over about fifty minutes, so a fight you walk away from is a fight you will have to start again.

Where to Find It

Only one Vile exists in the world at any moment, and it spawns anywhere in the open Plains at night, at a frequency the game rates very rare. It never carries stars, nothing summons it, no boss kill unlocks it, and no village or outpost hosts it, so you cannot farm it or raid a camp for it. You either happen across it on a night crossing or you do not. Daylight is the reliable defence, since the spawn condition is darkness, though nothing promises the one already on your heels will politely dissolve at sunrise. The Plains after dark already hold Fulings and Deathsquitoes, so players usually meet their first one badly, halfway through something else, with a lot of ground between them and the boat.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Nearly everything you own is the wrong tool. Blunt, slash and pierce all land at half, frost too, and chop, pickaxe and poison do nothing at all, which rules out axes, Frostner and every Poison Arrow in your quiver. What it genuinely fears is fire and spirit: Fire Arrows, a Staff of Embers or a Silver Sword turn twelve hundred health from a marathon into an ordinary fight. Fire is doubly good because it also drives the Vile backwards, so a Campfire or a line of Braziers between you and it does real tactical work, and a lit torch is worth the off-hand slot just for the attacks it makes miss. Do not try to trade blows. A slam of 150 blunt landing on a missed parry window kills you in most Plains armour, and the swipes come round every four seconds. Kite it, shoot it, step out of the slam circle rather than blocking it, and let the burn do the grinding. Padded armour and a healthy stack of Fire Arrows make it safe. At iron tier it is a thing to avoid until morning.

  • It takes extra damage from Fire and Spirit.
  • It shrugs off Blunt, Slash, Pierce and Frost.
  • It ignores Poison.

Drops

One or two Vile Ribcages are the whole reason to take the fight, since nothing else in the world drops them. The Bear Hide and meat come off it exactly like an ordinary bear's.

Level Variants

A creature can spawn at one of three levels, shown as stars beside its name. Each level is rolled separately when it spawns, so a two-star is rarer than a one-star. The Vile's natural night spawn always comes in at the base level, so the starred rows only apply to one spawned with stars by other means.
