Thunderblood Essence is unstable, erratic and, as its description wonders, alive. It turns a Nord weapon into its Thunderblood version. That adds a little to the weapon's main damage, adds lightning, gives every hit a one in four chance to set off chain lightning, and grants 0.2% more damage for every point of health you are missing. Those last two effects resemble the Iolite and Bloodstone upgrades from the Ashlands, carried on one weapon. The essence also goes into the Lightning Strike staff. It weighs half a unit and stacks to 50.
How to Get It
Both essences drop from the same fight. To call up a Fallen Warrior, lay three Memorial Coal on the ancient altar of a Memorial Site. These fields of headstones sit between 2 and 1,000 metres up in the Deep North, with up to fifteen in a world. The Fallen Warrior is undead, carries a random name and has 750 health, and it comes armed as one of these builds: a bronze-armoured axeman, a knife fighter with Skoll and Hati, a lightning mage with Dundr, a crystal battleaxe, a sword and shield, an archer with a knife, or a fire mage with a Staff of Embers. It is weak to spirit, resists blunt, slash, pierce and fire, and ignores poison.
Each essence has a one in two drop chance, and the two rolls are separate, so a warrior can drop both, one or neither. On average, one essence of a given kind costs you two fights and six Memorial Coal.
Notes
- Reforging resets the weapon to quality 1, so add the essence before spending anything on upgrades.
- A Thunderblood Sword deals 225 damage in total against 238 for the Frostfire Sword, but more of its damage is the sword's own slash.
Thunderblood Essence Crafting Recipes
Crafting a Thunderblood weapon takes one essence, along with the Nord weapon and twenty Bloodgold, at a level 4 Black Forge. The upgrades take one more and then two more, so a Thunderblood weapon uses four in all by quality 3, the most a level 6 Black Forge allows. The Lightning Strike also costs four at quality 3, which is the Galdr Table's limit.
Barka and Kall Fimbulbringer resist lightning. The missing-health bonus rewards fighting while hurt, so the Thunderblood weapons suit a player who trusts their healing. At half of a 200-health pool, the bonus is already +20%.
