Storm Ripper comes off the Black Forge for the moment when something in the Ashlands has to be put down before it closes the distance. It deals 220 pierce and 10 lightning damage. At 230 total damage it ranks 2nd among crossbows, so it is a step on the ladder rather than the top of it. In the Ashlands that matters more than it sounds. The Charred Marksman, Charred Twitcher and Charred Warlock shrug off fire and pierce alike, but not lightning, so the lightning half is the damage that actually lands. Lightning also hurts the Lava Blob, Morgen and Blob more than most things.

• 1x Iolite: found in the Charred Fortresses of the Ashlands.

When to Use It

Use it in the late game. Flametal comes from the Ashlands, the furthest south the map goes.

Properties

This puts chain lightning on a 220-pierce bolt. Iolite adds 10 lightning and a 25% chance of chain lightning: 75 damage that ignores skill and cannot be blocked or dodged. It bounces to 2 to 4 more targets within 8 metres.

Think of it as one bolt into a crowd. At 6 seconds a shot, crossbows only fire 10 times a minute, so a shot that also hits everything standing near the target is worth much more here than on a weapon that swings 3 times a second.

Notes

---

• Loading takes 3.5 seconds and 4 stamina. Add the ready and firing animations and the weapon can only fire once every 6 seconds.
• Jumping or sprinting resets your loading progress, and you cannot load bolts while sprinting.
• You lose a loaded bolt when you switch weapons: the crossbow reloads from empty whenever you equip it again.
• Upgrading does not raise lightning: it is 10 at quality 1 and still 10 at quality 4. The upgrades raise pierce from 220 to 229.
