The bolt does the damage and the jade does the rest: Root Ripper is the crossbow that leaves its Ashlands target stuck on the spot where you shot it. It deals 220 pierce and 10 poison, for 230 damage across all types, the same total as the Storm Ripper. In the Ashlands, Fader and Morgen both resist pierce but not poison, so the poison reaches them in full, though it is a small share of the damage. Pierce and poison also hurt the Cultist, the Tick and the Troll more than most mobs.

You craft it at a level 4 Black Forge from:

• 1x Ripper: crafted at a Black Forge.
• 8x Flametal: smelted from Flametal Ore in a Blast Furnace.
• 1x Jade: found in the charred fortresses of the Ashlands.

Properties

Immobilise from outside the fight. The Jade adds 10 poison and a 20% chance to immobilise the target for 10 seconds, which stops it moving and turning. 10 seconds is longer than a full reload, so a successful proc buys back the one real weakness of crossbows.

The poison adds little. Many creatures are immune to it, and the rest mostly live outside the Ashlands.

Notes

---

• Reloading takes 3.5 seconds and 4 stamina. Counting the time to raise and fire it, a crossbow can shoot at most once every 6 seconds.
• Jumping or sprinting cancels a reload in progress, and a crossbow cannot be reloaded while sprinting.
• Switching weapons unloads the crossbow, so it has to reload from empty every time it is equipped again.
• Upgrades raise its pierce damage from 220 to 229, but its poison damage stays at 10 at every quality level.
