The Large Leather Shield is a Medium Shield in Elden Ring. It can be picked up early in a run.

The Large Leather Shield is a leather-covered round shield, one of the larger medium shields, whose damage negation trails metal shields but covers a wider range of attack types. It is the starting shield of the Hero, sold for 600 runes by Merchant Kalé at the Church of Elleh, and later by the Twin Maiden Husks. It is one of the cheapest shields that can parry, weighing 3 and needing 8 Strength, with Parry as its default skill. That makes it a good shield for learning to parry. It suits beginners and early characters.

Skill

Parry costs no FP. Timed against a foe's melee attack, the parry deflects the blow and breaks the attacker's stance, opening them to a critical hit. It costs no FP, and the exact motion varies with the shield or weapon carrying it. It is the weapon's default Ash of War, so another can take its place.

"Use this skill in time with a foe's melee attack to deflect it and break that foe's stance. This provides an opening to perform a critical hit."

Guarding

With a guard boost of 49, a blocked hit that would cost 100 stamina only costs 51. It lets 9% of physical damage through, and against the elements it holds up best to magic, at 49%, and worst to fire, at 36%. A block that drains the last of the stamina bar breaks the guard, leaving an opening for a critical.

Build

A beginner's parry shield: Parry opens enemies for critical hits, and blocking covers the rest.

Stats	Strength 8 to wield it at full guard, with the rest set by the main weapon; a Strength and shield setup runs Vigor 50, Endurance 40 to 45 and Strength 75 to 80
Affinity	Heavy raises its Strength scaling to B for shield bashes and guard counters; elemental affinities trade some physical guarding for elemental negation.
Ash of War	Parry, its default, or Golden Parry for a wider, more forgiving parry.
