The Short Sword is a Straight Sword in Elden Ring. It is an early find in the Murkwater Cave.

The Short Sword is a light straight sword with a short blade that pairs reliable standard damage with strong piercing attacks and asks only humble attributes. It is starting equipment for the Astrologer, sells for 600 runes from the Nomadic Merchant east of Saintsbridge in Limgrave, and drops from foot soldiers and the Highwaymen of Murkwater Cave. Its heavy attack chain is unique and made up entirely of thrusts, so it deals reliable pierce damage that suits counterattacks. It performs surprisingly well on the Magic, Flame Art and Sacred affinities for a weapon of its size. It suits a starting character of any kind, especially an Astrologer who wants a light melee option.

Nomadic Merchant east of Saintsbridge for 600 Runes (x1).
4% drop chance off short sword-wielding enemies (Highwaymen, Godrick Foot Soldiers, Raya Lucaria Foot Soldiers, Radahn Foot Soldiers, Leyndell Foot Soldiers, Haligtree Foot Soldiers, and Messmer Foot Soldiers).
Murkwater Cave has many Highwaymen in a small area, making it a decent farming spot.

Skill

Kick costs no FP. The wielder plants a high front kick that pushes the enemy back and deals enormous stamina damage to anyone guarding, breaking the guard of nearly any shield. The kick itself deals little damage and costs no FP. The Divine Bird Warrior Greaves boost it. It is the weapon's default Ash of War, so another can take its place.

"Push an enemy back with a high kick. Effective against enemies who are guarding, and can break a foe's stance. Sometimes a simple tool is the most effective."

Suggested Build

Played as a light one-handed sword whose all-thrust heavy attacks punish enemies mid-attack for counter damage, kept on Kick to open blocking foes.

Stats	Strength 55 and Dexterity 55 for a quality build, Vigor 40, Endurance 24, Mind 10; a Magic setup runs Intelligence 60 with Vigor 50 and Mind 20
Affinity	Magic for an Intelligence character, Sacred or Flame Art for Faith, or a purely physical affinity to keep every hit as pierce damage for the Spear Talisman.
Ash of War	Kick, its default, for breaking an enemy's block.
