The Stone-Sheathed Sword is a Straight Sword in Elden Ring. It has the highest physical attack of any straight sword in the game. It belongs to Shadow of the Erdtree and waits in the Ancient Ruins of Rauh.
The Stone-Sheathed Sword is a sword that no one can pull from its scabbard of cracked stone, a relic of a lost civilization said to have served a ritual purpose at altars of light and darkness. It is taken from whichever of three altars is visited first, at the Fog Rift Catacombs, the Ruins of Unte, or the Ancient Ruins of Rauh in the Land of Shadow, and the other two altars turn it into the Sword of Darkness or the Sword of Light. Because the blade stays sheathed it deals strike damage, which is strong against armored and skeletal foes, and its one-handed heavy attack is the same horizontal slash as the Broadsword. Its Strength scaling is high for a straight sword and it has no Faith requirement, but its damage is low, only barely above the Cane Sword. It suits a Strength character who wants a blunt sword, and taking it from the Fog Rift Catacombs makes later switching easier.
How to Get Stone-Sheathed Sword Guide
- Found at an altar in either Fog Rift Catacombs, Ruins of Unte, or Ancient Ruins of Rauh. Since the altar in Fog Rift Catacombs is the most complicated to reach, it's recommended that the sword be taken there so that the later interactions with altars are less time-consuming.
- WARNING: Once either the Sword of Darkness or Sword of Light has been acquired, though the two forms can be freely switched between by traveling to their assigned altars, the Stone-Sheathed Sword itself cannot be reacquired until the next new game cycle begins.
- Fog Rift Catacombs: From the start, follow the path past the first and second falling-spikes roofs to the elevator. Continue to the third falling-spikes roof and get to the other side of the room (be wary of the pit in the second saferoom to the left). Use the raised platform at the end of the room to enter the hidden compartment in the falling roof, then ride it to a higher platform so that it is possible to stand on top of the falling roof. The altar is in the opposite right corner of the room, on the roof.
- Picking the sword up here means it turns into the Sword of Darkness at Ruins of Unte and the Sword of Light at Ancient Ruins of Rauh.
- Ruins of Unte: Found to the right inside the courtyard, blocked by a Furnace Golem (a Hefty Fire Pot can get it going again to open the path).
- Picking the sword up here means it turns into the Sword of Darkness at Fog Rift Catacombs and the Sword of Light at Ancient Ruins of Rauh.
- Ancient Ruins of Rauh: From Ancient Rauh Ruins, East Site of Grace, head across the bri.

Skill
Square Off costs 6 / 8 FP. The wielder holds the sword level in a ready stance, which costs nothing to hold but slows stamina recovery. A normal attack steps in with an upward slash that breaks through an enemy's guard, while a strong attack performs a running thrust. Holding the stance for a moment first lets Rellana's Cameo boost the follow-ups, and both can be parried.
Suggested Build
Played as a blunt one-handed Strength sword that uses Square Off to break guards and stance, or carried only until it is converted at the next altar.
