Blackwall Gateway

Blackwall Gateway
Blackwall Gateway
Class Ultimate Quickhack

Blackwall Gateway is the signature quickhack of the Militech Canto Mk.6, a cyberdeck linked to the rogue AIs beyond the Blackwall. The quickhack jumps from one target to the next and deals lethal damage to cyberware and nervous systems. Mechs, robots, drones and turrets it reaches simply shut down. It cannot be bought or crafted, since it lives inside a single Iconic cyberdeck. It suits a late game Intelligence build in Phantom Liberty that wants to clear a whole fight with one upload. Blackwall Gateway is a late game Phantom Liberty quickhack that comes installed on the Militech Canto Mk.6, crafted after the jobs Somewhat Damaged and This Corrosion.

Effect

Blackwall Gateway is an ultimate quickhack. V uploads it to one enemy, and it then spreads on its own to other enemies nearby. Every enemy it reaches takes lethal damage to their cyberware and neural systems. Mechs, robots, drones and turrets are deactivated outright instead.

The spread has a cost. Blackwall Gateway takes RAM automatically every time it jumps to a new target. Each jump uploads faster than the one before, but costs more RAM. A large RAM pool therefore lets the chain run further.

The first upload is slow. It takes several seconds before the gate opens on the first target.

The description ends with a hint. The rising cost can be cut in half for anyone willing to pay in blood. Overclock is the perk that lets V pay for quickhacks with Health once the RAM is gone.

Blackwall Gateway is traceable, so enemy netrunners can trace V through it.

How to Get Blackwall Gateway Guide

  • Side with Reed in the Phantom Liberty main job Firestarter.
  • In Somewhat Damaged, take the Crafting Spec: Militech Canto from the Experimental Prototyping lab in the Cynosure Facility. The door code is 714212.
  • Loot the behavioral system component from the Cerberus in the same job.
  • Finish Leave in Silence, then answer the message from an unknown number to start This Corrosion.
  • Let Yoko decrypt the component at Kabuki Market.
  • Craft the Militech Canto Mk.6 and install it at a ripperdoc. Blackwall Gateway comes with it.

Blackwall Gateway Map Location and Quest Guide

  1. On Reed's side of Phantom Liberty, start the main job Somewhat Damaged and follow Songbird's trail into the Cynosure Facility.
  2. Head down into the facility toward Sector 3.
  3. Find the Experimental Prototyping lab and open its door with the code 714212.
  4. Take the Crafting Spec: Militech Canto from inside the lab.
  5. Later in the job, loot the behavioral system component from the Cerberus robot.
  6. Finish Somewhat Damaged and the main job Leave in Silence.
  7. Wait for a message from an unknown number, which starts the side job This Corrosion.
  8. Meet the netrunner Yoko at Kabuki Market in Watson and hand over the component.
  9. Collect Cerberus' decoded behavioral system component once Yoko has decrypted it.
  10. Craft the Militech Canto Mk.6 with the decoded component and Tier 5 components.
  11. Install the Canto at a ripperdoc to unlock Blackwall Gateway.

The map shows Kabuki Market in Watson, where Yoko decrypts the Cerberus component needed for the Canto that carries it.

Upgrades

Blackwall Gateway is tied to the Militech Canto Mk.6. It cannot be bought from netrunners or crafted as a separate quickhack. The Canto is crafted at Tier 5 from its spec and a decoded component. It can then be raised to Tier 5+ and Tier 5++ in the crafting menu with Tier 5 crafting components.

The Erebus submachine gun offers a second route to the same power. Erebus uploads Blackwall Gateway on its own to a normal enemy whose Health is low. Only one of the two can be crafted in a playthrough, since both need the same decoded component.

Character Builds

Blackwall Gateway belongs in an Intelligence build built around RAM and Overclock. Overclock lets V keep uploading with too little RAM, paying with Health for each unit over the limit. Power Surge restores Health the moment Overclock starts. Sublimation turns RAM recovery into Health regen while Overclock is active. Blood Daemon restores Health for each quickhack queued on an enemy when V takes them down during Overclock. Spillover gives quickhacks a chance to spread to one more target while Overclock is active.

RAM matters a great deal here, since every jump costs more. Optimization raises the RAM recovery rate. Hack Queue and Queue Acceleration each add a point of max RAM. Frontal Cortex implants such as the Ex-Disk add max RAM. Memory Boost restores RAM when an enemy goes down. Encryption lowers the traceability of every quickhack, which helps during the long first upload.

Lore

The Blackwall is the barrier that NetWatch built to split the Net in two. Behind it lies the old Net, overrun by rogue AIs after the DataKrash. NetWatch guards the wall so those AIs stay locked away from the rest of cyberspace.

The in-game description admits that nobody is sure how the Canto opens gates through that wall. It might use a permaflux algorithm. The more frightening idea is that it talks to rogue AIs from beyond the Blackwall and persuades them to open the gates. The Canto itself speaks with the cold voice of an AI. Its remarks treat humans as flawed and tedious.

Militech built the deck for Project Cynosure, a secret Militech program. V finds the schematic deep inside the Cynosure Facility.

Notes

  • The Canto and the Erebus share one decoded component, so only one of them can be crafted.
  • Siding with Songbird in Firestarter loses the Canto and Blackwall Gateway for that playthrough.
