Onion is what lifts plain meat and bread into food worth carrying into a boss fight, and you cannot find it anywhere in the world. You grow it from Onion Seeds looted in the Mountain, planted with a Cultivator on tilled ground somewhere warmer.
Farming
- You grow Onions by planting Onion Seeds with the Cultivator.
- They take 4000s to 5000s to fully grow, which is 66m40s to 83m20s, or about 2.22-2.78 in-game days.
- Planting and growing a "Seed-onion" with the Cultivator gives 3 Onion Seeds.
- You can feed Onions to hungry Boars to begin or continue taming them, or to let them breed.
The Cultivator offers two different plants, and you choose between them when you plant. The onion plant is grown from seeds and harvested for onions to eat. The onion seed plant is grown from an onion and harvested for seeds and nothing else. Neither becomes the other, and an edible plant never produces seeds however long you leave it standing. The wild onion plants in the world are seed plants, which is why the first thing a farm gets from the wild is a handful of seeds.

How to Get It
Onions are farmed, not gathered. Collect Onion Seeds from Mountain Towers and Abandoned Cabins, or from Coral Cod caught on a Fishing Rod. Then till a patch with a cultivator and sow them in the Meadows, Black Forest or Plains, the only biomes where they will actually come up. Give each plant a little room or it will wither, and expect a long wait before the crop matures. You can put a harvested onion back into the ground through the cultivator's seed option, so a single trip up the mountain is the last one you ever need to make.
