Smithing Guide
Enchanted weapons require the Arcane Blacksmith Perk to upgrade.
Upgrades
Vilkas's Sword is improved at a grindstone with one Steel Ingot per improvement. The Steel Smithing perk doubles the improvement, so each quality tier needs less Smithing skill. An enchanted copy can only be improved with the Arcane Blacksmith perk.

Weapon Levels
Some weapons in Skyrim are Levelled. The power of a levelled weapon is based on your charcters level when you get them. Some get stronger in both physical and magical aspects, while others only improve their enchantments. These items don't get better as your character levels up.
Vilkas's Sword has the same damage at every character level.
| Level | Damage | Weight | Value | Enchantment | Level ID |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1+ | 11 | 10 | 70 | Cannot be enchanted | 0009F25C |
How It Plays
Vilkas's Sword is a Skyforge Steel Sword with a name of its own. It looks like a plain Steel Sword, but it hits as hard as an Elven Sword. That is a strong blade for the very start of the game, when most characters still carry iron or steel.
The sword's value comes from its timing. The Companions can be joined as soon as the Dragonborn reaches Whiterun, so this blade arrives in the first hours of play. It is tempered with a Steel Ingot, and the Steel Smithing Perk doubles each improvement.
Eorlund Gray-Mane sells the same Skyforge Steel Sword at the Skyforge. The Companions also hand out a free Skyforge Steel weapon at the end of Proving Honor. A character who wants a Skyforge blade can therefore get one without Vilkas's copy.
Quest Background
The sword belongs to Take Up Arms, the first quest of the Companions in Whiterun. In Jorrvaskr, the Harbinger Kodlak Whitemane is willing to consider a newcomer, while Vilkas doubts them. Kodlak orders Vilkas to take the newcomer out to the yard to test their form.
Vilkas only wants to see a few swings, and he promises he can take it. After a few good hits, he is satisfied. A newcomer who drops his health to zero earns the remark "most impressive" instead of "not bad".
Vilkas then hands over his sword with a newcomer's errand: take it to Eorlund Gray-Mane to be sharpened. Eorlund works at the Skyforge, just up the stairs from Jorrvaskr. He is the best smith in Whiterun, and he forges Skyforge Steel for the Companions. Eorlund explains that newcomers get bossed around for a while. He then asks for a favour of his own and sends the newcomer to Aela the Huntress with Aela's Shield.
Once the shield is delivered, Farkas shows the newcomer to the living quarters and a free bed. Take Up Arms ends there, and the newcomer is a member of the Companions.
