Aela's Shield is a heavy shield and a quest item for the Companions. It is identical to a Steel Shield, with a base armor rating of 24 and a weight of 12. Eorlund Gray-Mane hands it over at the Skyforge in Whiterun during Take Up Arms, the first Companions quest.

Aela's Shield is handed over by Eorlund Gray-Mane at the Skyforge in Whiterun. It comes up during Take Up Arms, on joining the Companions.
- Travel to Jorrvaskr in Whiterun and speak to Kodlak Whitemane.
- Train with Vilkas in the courtyard.
- Take Vilkas' sword to Eorlund Gray-Mane at the Skyforge.
- Accept Aela's Shield from Eorlund.
- Bring the shield to Aela in the living quarters of Jorrvaskr.

Quest Background
Aela's Shield belongs to Take Up Arms, the quest that brings a newcomer into the Companions. After a sparring match in the courtyard of Jorrvaskr, Vilkas hands over his sword for sharpening. The sword goes to Eorlund Gray-Mane, the smith who works at the Skyforge just up the stairs from Jorrvaskr.
Eorlund guesses at once that the visitor is the new recruit. He then asks a favor and hands over a shield for Aela the Huntress. Aela waits in the living quarters of Jorrvaskr, talking with Skjor. She takes the shield, recognizes the newcomer if they met at the giant fight near Pelagia Farm, and calls Farkas over. Farkas shows the way to the sleeping quarters, and the quest ends with the newcomer as a member of the Companions.
After the delivery, the shield stays in Aela's inventory. It can be taken back through trade once she becomes a follower, or by stealing it.
How It Plays
Aela's Shield matches a Steel Shield in everything but its name. It is heavy armor and is tempered at a workbench with a Steel Ingot. The Steel Smithing perk doubles each improvement.
Carried together with ordinary Steel Shields, it stacks with them in the inventory. The stack then takes the name of whichever shield sits on top. As armor, it suits an early heavy armor character in the first hours of the Companions questline.
Lore
Aela the Huntress is a member of the Circle, the secret inner group of the Companions. She becomes a follower and a possible spouse once the Companions questline is complete.
The Skyforge, where Eorlund works, is an ancient forge beside Jorrvaskr. A loading screen says that nobody knows who built it. The same screen says its discovery led to the building of Jorrvaskr and the Companions as they are today. Eorlund says his clan has worked the forge since the first Gray-Manes came to Whiterun.

Temper it at a workbench with one Steel Ingot. The Steel Smithing perk doubles the improvement.

Enchanted weapons require the Arcane Blacksmith Perk to upgrade.

Aela's Shield is improved at a workbench with one Steel Ingot per improvement. The Steel Smithing perk doubles the improvement, so each quality tier needs less Smithing skill. An enchanted copy can only be improved with the Arcane Blacksmith perk.
