RangeGuard gives V a large armor bonus as long as no enemy stands close by. It rewards a character who fights from a distance and keeps enemies away. Snipers, marksmen and netrunners who hack from cover get its full value most of the time. The bonus drops away the moment an enemy closes in. A Cool character also gains headshot damage from it for each point of Cool. RangeGuard is an early game implant that every ripperdoc in Night City and Dogtown sells from the start.
Effect
RangeGuard checks the space around V. When no enemy is within 6 meters, V gains extra armor. At Tier 1 the bonus is 30 armor, and at Tier 5 it reaches 90. As soon as an enemy steps inside 6 meters, the bonus switches off.
Armor lowers the damage of each hit V takes. RangeGuard therefore protects V best against gunfire from far away. That is the kind of damage a ranged build faces most often.
RangeGuard is attuned to Cool. Each point of Cool adds 0.2% headshot and weak spot damage. At 20 Cool, that is 4% more damage on every headshot. The implant also adds its own block of armor that is always on.
Its stat bonuses add Bonus Stealth Damage and, from Tier 2, RAM regeneration whenever V neutralizes an enemy.

Upgrades
Ripperdocs stock RangeGuard at Tier 1 below level 10, then Tier 2 from level 10, Tier 3 from 20, Tier 4 from 30 and Tier 5 from 40. An installed copy can be raised a tier at a ripperdoc with the matching item components. Each tier raises the armor bonus that applies when no enemy is near. The Driver Update perk adds one more stat bonus. The Chipware Connoisseur perk offers a choice of bonuses when V upgrades the implant. V gains Cyberware Capacity with each level and from Cyberware Capacity Shards. The Edgerunner perk lets V go over the limit at the cost of some max Health.
The table shows what each tier step of RangeGuard costs at a ripperdoc.

Character Builds
RangeGuard belongs in a Cool build that fights at range. Deadeye adds headshot and weak spot damage, and Focus adds more while aiming at full Stamina. Long Shot keeps full damage at any distance while Deadeye is active. Nerves Of Tungsten-Steel makes headshots and weak spot hits guaranteed critical hits while Deadeye is active. Precision rifles and sniper rifles keep V far from the enemy, so the armor bonus stays on.
Netrunners also stay at range. An Intelligence build that hacks from cover keeps enemies far away most of the time. The RAM regeneration bonus from Tier 2 helps those builds as well.
Visual Cortex Support raises crit chance the farther V is from the target. It fits the same playstyle as RangeGuard. Other Integumentary System implants, such as the Pain Editor, cover the moments when an enemy breaks through. ProxiShield works the opposite way, protecting V only at close range.
Lore
The in-game line twists an old saying. It says to keep friends far and enemies even farther.
