The Pain Editor cuts every hit V takes by a flat share, no matter where the damage comes from. Every source of incoming damage is reduced. The cut is always on and needs no trigger. That makes it one of the simplest ways to make V harder to kill in the late game. A Cool character gets the most out of it, because each point of Cool adds to the reduction. The Pain Editor is a late game implant that every ripperdoc in Night City and Dogtown sells from level 30.
Effect
The Pain Editor lowers all incoming damage. At Tier 4 the cut is 6%, and at Tier 5 it rises to 7%. The reduction works on every hit, so it helps in any kind of fight.
The Pain Editor is attuned to Cool. Each point of Cool adds another tenth of a percent to the reduction. At 20 Cool, the total cut reaches 9% at Tier 5.
A flat cut is worth more when the hits are large. Bosses, heavy weapons and cyberpsychos deal the kind of damage where a few percent saves V's life. The cut also makes every Health Item and every point of Health go further.
The implant adds a large block of armor as well. Its stat bonuses add Damage Over Time Resistance and, from Tier 2 onward, Mitigation Chance.
How to Get Pain Editor Guide

Upgrades
Ripperdocs sell the Pain Editor at Tier 4 from level 30 and at Tier 5 from level 40. An installed copy can be raised a tier at a ripperdoc with the matching item components. Each tier raises the damage cut and the armor. The Driver Update perk adds one more stat bonus. The Chipware Connoisseur perk offers a choice of bonuses when V upgrades the implant. The Pain Editor has a high capacity cost. V gains Cyberware Capacity with each level and from Cyberware Capacity Shards. The Edgerunner perk lets V go over the limit at the cost of some max Health.
The table shows what each tier step of Pain Editor costs at a ripperdoc.
| Upgrade | Components | Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Tier 4 to Tier 4+ | 50 Tier 4 components | - |
| Tier 4+ to Tier 5 | 37 Tier 5 components | - |
| Tier 5 to Tier 5+ | 50 Tier 5 components | - |
| Tier 5+ to Tier 5++ | 125 Tier 5 components | Phantom Liberty |
Character Builds
The Pain Editor suits any late game build that wants to stay alive, and it works best with points in Cool. A Cool build that sneaks and shoots from range still gets caught sometimes. The Pain Editor softens those moments.
Several Technical Ability perks help with defensive cyberware. All Things Cyber lowers the capacity cost of Integumentary System and Skeleton implants by 20%. That makes the Pain Editor's high cost easier to fit. Chrome Constitution cuts incoming damage by another 5% when every Integumentary System and Skeleton slot is filled. License To Chrome adds a Skeleton slot and more armor.
Other implants in the Integumentary System slots stack well with it. Painducer turns part of each hit into slow damage over time. ProxiShield cuts damage from enemies who are close by. Together they can make V very hard to kill.
