The Bastard Sword is a Greatsword in Elden Ring. Players can grab it early, in the Weeping Peninsula.

The Bastard Sword is a large straight-bladed sword normally wielded with two hands, though those with enough strength can use it in one, and its broad sweeping attack can cut into several foes at once. It is sold by the Nomadic Merchant at the Castle Morne Rampart in the Weeping Peninsula. One-handed it swings in wide horizontal arcs that cover crowds, while two-handed it switches to stronger upward and downward vertical slashes. It is not the top greatsword for damage or stagger, but its high base damage for low requirements makes it a flexible early pick, and its Strength scaling grows as it is upgraded. It suits an early Strength or quality character.

Skill

Stamp costs 5 / 8 FP. The wielder braces the weapon and stamps into a low stance that keeps most enemy attacks from staggering the wielder, letting the wielder absorb a hit. Following with a strong attack unleashes a heavy upward strike for extra FP, while a normal attack instead flows into the second swing of the light combo at no FP cost. It is the weapon's default Ash of War, so another can take its place.

"Brace armament and step into a low stance that prevents recoil from most enemy attacks. Follow up with a strong attack for an upward strike."

Suggested Build

An early two-handed Strength greatsword that clears crowds with wide sweeps and finishes stance breaks with Stamp or Lion's Claw.

Stats Strength to 60, then 80, Vigor 50 to 60, Endurance about 40, Mind about 10, Dexterity 10 at its requirement
Affinity Heavy, which pushes its growing Strength scaling; other affinities through whetblades for other stats.
Ash of War Stamp (Upward Cut), its default, braces through hits before an upward slash; Lion's Claw is the stronger poise-breaking option.
