The Dark Moon Greatsword is a Greatsword in Elden Ring.

When to Use It

Mid game. It is found around Liurnia of the Lakes, which opens up past Stormveil Castle, so it arrives once a build has taken shape.

Why Players Pick It

Best Int scaling in the class and 200 physical + 240 magic at max standard. Its skill imbues frost and grants a projectile R2 doing 22 stance damage, 35 charged. The caveat you should know before committing: as of patch 1.12 its second one-handed R1 has a motion value of 68 where every other Greatsword's is 101.

Upgrades

It takes Somber Smithing Stones rather than the common kind, one per level up to +10, and it keeps its own skill for good: no Ash of War will replace it and no affinity will re-cut its scaling.

Skill

Moonlight Greatsword costs 32 FP. Raise the sword aloft, bathing it in the light of the dark moon. Temporarily increases magic attack power and imbues blade with frost. Charged attack release blasts of moonlight. It belongs to this weapon alone: no Ash of War will move it onto anything else, and nothing will replace it here.

Build

Its scaling runs Str at D, Dex at D and Int at C, so Int is the stat worth levelling, and you need Str 16, Dex 11 and Int 38 before you can lift it. Because the skill is its own, the build has to come to the weapon rather than the other way round. It also frost buildup on its own, with no infusion needed.

Notes

A Moon Greatsword bestowed by a Carian queen upon her spouse to honor long-standing tradition. One of the legendary armaments. Ranni's sigil is a full moon, cold and leaden, and this sword is but a beam of its light.
