Albert is a beggar and self-styled master storyteller who tells his tales for coin by the fountain in the Merchant Quarter of Vernworth. The Arisen meets him when a listener wonders how a beggar comes by so much money.
Story
Albert seems to do very well for a beggar, and even his fellow beggars are puzzled by how much coin he has. Benton, a beastren who listens to his tales, doubts that storytelling explains it. Following Albert shows that he leads a double life. By day he is a beggar who goes home to his wife Celina in the Common Quarter. At night he leaves the house in noble clothes for Baldwin's Estate in the Noble Quarter, where his other wife, the noblewoman Hilda, lives. The beggar's garb he leaves behind is the proof of his deceit, and its fate decides his. Returned to Albert, it buys the Arisen's silence. Given to Celina, it ends with both Albert and Celina found dead. Given to Hilda, it leads her to confront him.
