Elden Ring - Greases

Greases coat the right-hand weapon with extra elemental damage, status build-up or bonus damage against dragons. Each coat lasts a short time and replaces any other weapon buff. A grease matched to an enemy's weakness gives builds without buff spells a quick way to add an element.

Standard and Drawstring

Standard greases last 60 seconds. Drawstring greases apply faster and hit harder, but fade within seconds. Fire, Magic, Lightning and Holy Grease each add 85 flat damage, while their drawstring forms add 110. Base-game drawstring greases last between about 10 and 15 seconds.

A drawstring grease suits a quick burst of damage, while a standard grease covers a whole fight. Standard greases can be carried 10 at a time, and base-game drawstring greases 30 at a time.

Crafting

Base-game greases are crafted from Root Resin plus one ingredient that sets the element. A drawstring grease uses the same recipe plus String. Smoldering Butterfly makes fire, Crystal Bud makes magic, Fulgurbloom makes lightning and Golden Sunflower makes holy. Bloodrose makes blood, Poisonbloom makes poison, Aeonian Butterfly makes rot, Rimed Crystal Bud makes frost and Trina's Lily makes sleep.

Each grease and its drawstring form come from the same cookbook. Many greases also lie on corpses in castles, caves and catacombs.

Status Greases

Blood Grease adds 30 blood loss build-up to each hit. Poison, Rot and Freezing Grease each add 63 build-up to each hit. Soporific Grease adds 33 sleep build-up to each hit. On a few weapons with Arcane scaling, such as the Ripple Blade, the added build-up grows with Arcane.

Rot Grease build-up never grows with Arcane. Weapons that already cause rot stack their own build-up with the grease for faster procs. Thiollier sells Poison Grease and Drawstring Poison Grease.

Dragon Greases

Dragonwound Grease raises damage against dragons by 30% and against ancient dragons by 20%. Magma Wyrms count as dragons for this grease. The Isolated Merchant in Dragonbarrow sells Dragonwound Grease for 3,000 runes. Glintstone Dragon Smarag guards one on the islands north of the Temple Quarter.

Dragon Communion Grease from the Realm of Shadow raises damage to dragons by 38% and to ancient dragons by 28%.

Knotgreases

Greases from the Realm of Shadow use Knot Resin instead of Root Resin. Messmerfire, Royal Magic, Dragonbolt and Golden Grease each add 120 flat damage for 60 seconds. Their drawstring forms add 135 flat damage for 25 seconds. That makes them stronger than the base-game greases of the same element.

Festive Grease adds 100 holy damage and grants 25 runes for every hit on an enemy.

Shield Grease

Shield Grease coats the left-hand shield instead of the weapon. For 60 seconds it raises guarded damage negation by 20% against all damage types. It also cuts stamina damage taken while blocking by 35%. Together with the Greatshield Talisman it cuts that stamina damage by 48%.

Shields with weak guard stats gain the most, and it works on shields of any affinity. It is crafted from Root Resin, a Silver Tear Husk and a Crystal Bud.
