Elden Ring - Upgrade Materials
Upgrade materials strengthen weapons, spirit ashes and the Sacred Flasks. Smithing stones and gloveworts raise equipment one level at a time, while seeds and tears improve the flasks. Two further materials raise blessings that only work in the Realm of Shadow.
Smithing Stones
Smithing stones strengthen regular armaments, the standard weapons and shields. Each grade covers three upgrade levels, from Smithing Stone [1] for +1 to +3 up to Smithing Stone [8] for +22 to +24. The three steps of a grade take two, four and six stones. An Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone performs the last step, from +24 to +25.
A smithing table only reaches +3. Smithing Master Hewg in Roundtable Hold and War Counselor Iji take a weapon the rest of the way.
Somber Stones
Somber smithing stones strengthen special armaments, the unique weapons that regular stones cannot improve. A special armament stops at +10 instead of +25. Each level takes one somber stone of the matching grade. War Counselor Iji sells Somber Smithing Stone [1] and Somber Smithing Stone [2] without limit.
The final step needs a Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone, which no merchant sells.
Gloveworts
Gloveworts are white catacomb flowers used for spirit tuning. Roderika performs spirit tuning in Roundtable Hold once her quest brings her there. Grave Glovewort strengthens standard spirit ashes, the summons with no personal name. Ghost Glovewort strengthens renowned spirit ashes, the named heroes and puppets.
Both kinds take a spirit ash up to +10, and the last step needs a great glovewort. Catacombs and hero's graves hold most of them.
Flask Upgrades
Golden Seeds add charges to the Sacred Flasks, up to 14 uses. Later charges cost more seeds, rising from one seed per charge to five. Sacred Tears raise how much each flask restores, up to +12. Seeds sit under small glowing golden saplings, and tears rest in churches.
Both are used at any Site of Grace through the Flasks menu.
Shadow Realm Blessings
Scadutree Fragments and Revered Spirit Ashes are found only in the Realm of Shadow. Fragments raise the Scadutree Blessing, which boosts attack power and damage negation. Revered Spirit Ashes raise a second blessing for Torrent and summoned spirits. Both are spent at a Site of Grace, and neither blessing works outside the Realm of Shadow.
The Scadutree Blessing tops out at level 20, and the spirit blessing at level 10.
Bell Bearings
Bell bearings turn upgrade materials into unlimited stock at the Twin Maiden Husks in Roundtable Hold. Smithing-Stone Miner's Bell Bearings unlock the regular smithing stones, two grades at a time. Somberstone Miner's Bell Bearings unlock the somber grades in the same way. Glovewort Picker's and Ghost-Glovewort Picker's Bell Bearings unlock three glovewort grades each.
The ancient dragon stones and the great gloveworts never appear in the shop.
