Elden Ring - Ammunition

Ammunition is what bows, crossbows, greatbows and ballistas fire. Plain arrows and bolts are cheap at almost every merchant, while bone ammunition is crafted from Thin Beast Bones and a second material. Special types add elemental damage, status build-up or a utility effect.

Arrows and Bolts

Arrows are fired from bows and light bows. Bolts are fired from crossbows. Great arrows go in greatbows, and greatbolts go in ballistas. The plain Arrow and Bolt deal only physical damage.

Fletched versions carry feathers that give them a longer flight than the plain version. Most ammunition deals pierce damage, with an elemental part on the special types.

Crafting

Bone ammunition is crafted from Thin Beast Bones plus one extra material. Bone arrows use three Thin Beast Bones, and bone bolts use two. Bone great arrows use a Hefty Beast Bone instead. Each recipe is unlocked by a cookbook, such as Nomadic Warrior's Cookbook [1] for the Bone Arrow.

A fletched recipe needs one Flight Pinion more than the plain one in most cases. Shattershard Arrow (Fletched) and Rainbow Stone Arrow (Fletched) cannot be crafted, even though their descriptions say they can.

Status Ammunition

Several crafted arrows and bolts build a status effect with each hit. Poisonbone, Bloodbone, Rotbone, Coldbone and Sleepbone ammunition cover poison, blood loss, scarlet rot, frostbite and sleep. The Serpent Arrow builds more poison per hit than the Poisonbone Arrow and is sold without limit in Caelid. St. Trina's Arrow builds more sleep per hit than the Sleepbone Arrow but comes only in small stocks.

The Spiritflame Arrow mixes magic damage with frost build-up.

Great Arrows and Greatbolts

Great arrows are spear-sized shafts that deal far more damage per shot than arrows. The Bone Great Arrow can be crafted from a Hefty Beast Bone. Golem's Great Arrow and Golem's Magic Arrow drop only from Guardian Golems that carry greatbows. The Golden Great Arrow deals holy damage and boosts the archer and nearby allies on impact.

The Explosive Greatbolt and the Lightning Greatbolt deal heavy fire and lightning damage from a ballista.

Merchants

The Arrow costs 20 runes and the Bolt costs 40 runes at most merchants. Merchant Kalé at the Church of Elleh sells both without a stock limit. The Hermit Merchant at the Hermit Merchant's Shack sells the Golden Arrow and the Golden Great Arrow. The Isolated Merchant in Greyoll's Dragonbarrow sells the Serpent Arrow.

The Nomadic Merchant on Mt. Gelmir sells the Explosive Bolt and the Explosive Greatbolt. The Twin Maiden Husks add special ammunition once the right bell bearing is handed over.

Realm of Shadow

Grave Keeper's Cookbook [1] teaches the Piquebone Arrow, the Piquebone Arrow (Fletched) and the Piquebone Bolt. Piquebone ammunition releases white smoke that lures humanoid enemies. Igon's Harpoon is a great arrow with an anti-dragon effect, sold after Igon's Bell Bearing reaches the Twin Maiden Husks. Rabbath's Greatbolt explodes with magic damage and is sold after the Spellmachinist's Bell Bearing reaches the Twin Maiden Husks.

Moore at the Main Gate Cross sells the Arrow and the Bolt without a stock limit.
